Cold outbreak later this week/weekend for SI...

Sleet turned to snow here for about 20 minutes with large flakes so nice to see so early in the season.

Possibly more heavy showers hail,sleet and snow coming through overnight here's hoping.
1.3C here atm brrr.

Frontal band now seems to be clearing from the west, 8mm so far today, 11c.

Those high-topped hailstorms situated northwest of Westport at the moment should reach the upper North Island in the early hours of tomorrow

I didn't really expect Chch to be on 1c at 6pm!

I recall, actually, you (pretty sure it was you?) wrote a post back in SEP last year right before the Sep 19th snow about snow conditions for here in Canterbury...something like the 500MB thickness needs to be below 530 and the 850MB temp at -4C or colder with plenty of humidity to get "squeezed" out by the cold air...well, that is what the models were showing at the time and so that is why I asked the question

I have only been living here in CHCH for 6 years (I am originally from the States) but I have started to notice some patterns with the weather, but it IS mother nature, after all, and She will do what she wants despite our best efforts

Good showery sleet/hail shower through here from 5:50pm.
Rain stopped here at 7:30pm eventually with 29.9mm falling from 9am this morning.
Temp now down to 4.5C and the moon is poking it's nose through the clouds.

It's taken a while too.

I see the windchill in Island Bay, Wellington is down to -6c.

These guys needs to do something about their rain gauge!

Interesting the way the temperature dropped suddenly near the back end of that front over Christchurch turning rain to sleet. I would say this was caused by a mesoscale convective feature. Impossible to forecast. Will be interesting to see how this trough affects the North Island. Should be some good snow overnight closing the Desert Road.

Front looks through here (12mm).

Interesting you say that Steven. I maintained my 2 for today, because I thought that something may happen. There were one or two sudden bursts of rain from 4pm here today, none with hail but then just before 6pm the rain stopped then out came the burst of wintry hailly/sleety showers. If there had of been a flash, I wouldn't of been surprised. non-

Yeh I would say just wintry showers hail sleet coming through overnight until about midday tomorrow then farmers face thier first real frost good luck

.
Otherwise a relativly calm week ahead until next wekend with rain on the cards at this stage.
But what a magnificant start to winter wait a minute its still autumn

anyway we all know of what could be installed for us with NIWA predictign more heavy rain for eastern North and South islands this winter with lows in the southern ocean and SE flows could be some ok snowfalls too $\:D/$ .
If you cant chase thunderstorms then you gotta enjoy snow right

Its cold enough for snow to about 800m in that region but I think they have missed much of the precipitation.

Heard thunder 11.30pm, saw a bit more lightning during the night when woken by the wind/rain.

I see Geoff Mackley has gone down to Waiouru.

I would like to do a snow chase down there this winter, but will pick the situation. I would like to see a broad cold disturbed WSW flow over the country with a low/warm front coming in from the north Tasman. That would be a good snow maker for the Tongariro region.

the low is starting to realy wind up more just off hawkes bay.....and if comes in a bit closer again...the front will move back into the desert road area?

Still in Hanmer - the snow looks to have fallen to fairly low levels, I'm going to see if I can find any in town before I hit the road.

Passing squally showers with small hail around Akaroa overnight and this morning. Snow is lying above about 500-600m, but is only a light dusting. I guess this stuff is mostly coastal now for Canterbury - is Chch getting any of it?
BTW was/is there any snow from last evening lying on the Port Hills and on the plains, eg Darfield, Methven?
