We are managing to avoid frost this winter in Auckland. The average daily min for June to date is 10C. (Grey Lynn)

NIWA's prediction for an average to above average winter for temperature is coming off.

Also, it's possible Ricky or myself or someone else might be able to access & replace the faulty reed switch, so don't just throw the old one out. It may still be of value.
The old one sitting here inside now, in surprisingly good nick (wind cups still shiny even!)
The magnet on the inside of the wind cups component has rusted a little, but the switch itself didn't look too bad...
I replaced the reed switch on one of mine no problem a while ago.. needs new bearings now!
I have one spare reed switch here, should post the RS part# if I can find my order.

seems as there is a weak upper trough going over atm. Wee bit unstable out there, although nothing will happen, just something to point out. No land heating at all for a start. Very cold start this morning also!

Looks like a period of milder weather on the way in a few days time with a NW flow. Wont be overly warm with all the snow on the alps but still milder none the less and a break in the frosts.

Noticeably colder in the north today with the polar blast across the country lasting for another couple of days yet.

Yes milder next week.

fog hung round nearly all day today. it finally cleared around 3.45pm. temp peaked at 4.5°C shortly afterwards before dropping quickly. below zero again now.
spent less than 4.5 hours above zero today.

so atleast one record set today:
coldest max temp caused by fog (previous record 4.6°C).
and It'll be close to my lowest average temp day (1 minute). record is currently -1.3°C.

Looks like we could get our first light frost for the winter on Saturday morning

Amazing what even a weak high pressured SW flow can do, with steady to light showers wafting on through the region tonight maybe even some small hail in some of them.
Not the extra rain we need but atleast it is a milder and dry week coming up.

Hi Michael
Do you mean Richard is on Duncan Garners show on LIVE (not Philip Duncans? lol )
He's also been on with Marcus Lush on Live and now on Morning report on National Radio.
Dan Corbett isn't on as much but better on the small screen perhaps.

Not to mention them going for 4 and 5C maximums for Darfield on Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday when even the biggest weather novice could see it was going to be at LEAST 10-12C (which it did end up being of course)

1C in Waddington at 5.30pm, if the NW stays away it could be a -4C or -5C night...

I find it absolutely astounding and somebody might be able to explain it to me but Christchurch Airport gets colder minimums, both for extreme (we haven't had below -2C here all year whereas the airport had had multiple -3C and -4C's) and for the average over the month. We are 300m asl and 60km inland, why would the airport be colder for minimums??

Mind you i find to hard to believe that Darfield hasn't gone under -2 deg when you compare to the lows Methven has had so far,and its about the same height 319m asl

Agreed - going by Wunderground PWS it looks like Darfield has a milder micro-climate. Its two stations are sitting on 8C with most others across the Plains between -2C and 2C !

Of course, Darfield now has a big Fonterra plant...
