Re: General March Weather
Large scale ascent upstream of the upper trough/jet has been fostering overnight thunderstorms over the South Island as expected. Interestingly a strong burst of elevated activity over inland Otago/Southland last night. I have seen that clip of the lightning at Alexandra!
Front over the west of the North Island has much warmer upper air. Looks like just heavy showers.

Re: General March Weather
what a great show
because it was elevated, is that why there was no warning on it from M/S?

Re: General March Weather
from what I saw, it was moving slowly SSE from the Mt Cook area, and wasa wrapping back down into southland even
so a large area of Central and Eastern Otago would have got rain..there is the last 8 hour rain radar on M/S web site...
farmers in eastern Otago needing dams filled should be happy

Re: General March Weather
The lapse rates over Canterbury are quite steep at 7C which is a good number for convection. GFS is plotting the afternoon convergence some distance inland.
I like the clip from Clyde.

Re: General March Weather
The Lightning frequency from those storms was quite high, signifies some very good upper level dynamics.
Some fairly high amplitude strikes around last night as well meaning convection was elevated.
