Re: General December Weather
Convergence zone expected around Hamilton from around 3-4 PM onwards. Instability is there, just depends on the surface temps getting high enough to trigger off some pulsy storms.
-14*C at 500mb is an iffy upper level temp if SFC temps sit at 22, 24 degrees + should more favourable under these conditions, stronger wind convergence will also help with lift.
Monday's Storm Prognostic around the Waikato/BOP at this stage still looks good but with less shear.

Agreed Richard . I was in Blenheim on the 3rd Dec ,saw some very powerfull pulse storms over those mountains that evening. The location must be similar to the central/east N is where there is convergence from many directions focussng on one point.I see Tauranga got some rain [ist for a month] 5ks away nothing here temps above 20 deg all night .Yuk !!!

GFS indicating a hot day over much of the North Island on Friday, late twenties for many areas and into the low thirties inland

Re: General December Weather
Currently 25.5 with a 17.5 dp. Has a real hot hazy look to the airmass (full of moisture). Should be decent this arvo where the wind convergence is once the sea breezes kick in.

Re: General December Weather
The forecast rain arrived a smidge earlier down here. Was a lovely warmish day before temp dropped to 15°C with some heavy rain and a few rumbles. Looks like we'll get quite a dumping this arvo, with up to 30mm.
Good day to bottle a Black IPA.
Looking out the window I see a sea of steam - off the paddocks, our roof, the road. Quite surreal in a 80's horror kinda way.

Warm day here with it up to 29C and a light easterly breeze, much warmer than Timaru.

Re: General December Weather
Strong storm in the Kaikouras atm, also Central NI starting to fire up. Been a couple strikes around Oamaru now aswell. Unsure how the rest of the afternoon will pan out in Canterbury but I might pop out if something goes up close to Christchurch.

Re: General December Weather
At last clouds are starting to gather, properly, around Mt. Peel area and further north by the look if it.
Fresh SE breeze has come through here and reduced the temperature by 5C in the last half hour.
Thunder now being heard

Re: General December Weather
It feels very oppressive here, 28deg.C indoors *mops brow*
Sky darkening to the west with a large cloud I've been watching for a while.
It feels like the air needs clearing...

Yes, Thunderstorm moving eastward from out of the Mt. Peel area. Lots of rumbles, only saw one lightning flash and that was along the base of the cloud. Seems to be weakoning now.

I believe I'm also hearing thunder from that effort out to the south-west of Ashburton, busy afternoon.

All over bar the shouting, from here but also there are still some juicy 'uplifts' in behind the M. Peel area

Yes.

I just saw that. Looks very cloudy to the north of here, plus the sferics are crackling away but nothing much to get excited about not dark looking and sinister as one would imagine.

Re: General December Weather
The Canterbury convection looks elevated. I see the PWS at Winslow got 29mm in under an hour and a gust of 39knots.
Hot spot in NZ today was Blenheim on atleast 32C and Masterton 31C.
