The heavy falls are very hit and miss. Just 6mm of moderate showers here, and 4mm at the Airport.Cyclone Tracy wrote: Sat 19/05/2018 17:04 These showers have some punch. Just very briefly hit a 164 mm/h rainfall rate and 11 mm in that quick downpour.

12mm here. A stronger shortwave at 500mb would have got the clouds sparking today. Just lacked the omph.David wrote: Sat 19/05/2018 18:14The heavy falls are very hit and miss. Nothing was picked up by trackers. Nothing observed at NZstorm HQ.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: Sat 19/05/2018 19:09 There was lightning around Auckland according to the lady who reads the weather on TV One news, tonight.![]()
Could be some lightning around Auckland in the Tuesday to Thursday timeframe but will depend on the pattern plays out.

Sudden gusts of wind just hit here, trees tossing, wires humming, sounds quite turbulent.

Just got back from the junk-shop at Mayfield.
Gale NW there with branches flying everywhere, one hitting the windscreen of the truck.
Looking very bleak along the Alps and foothills. I bet the sound of thunder is being heard in there as well!

Should be a reasonable lightning display towards the mountains once it gets dark. Wind hasnt been to bad here so far, once the rain arrives it normally stops.

The sequence begins
My 2 bobs worth on the 4.20pm sat pic and surface low locations. Near the 2nd and 3rd surface low is probably the most powerful upper low currently on earth.

Thanks for the clip, more Thunder around NZ this week. Heard 1 clap of thunder here last night.
This Wednesday has been looking like a cold day for Auckland in what has been a mild May so far with the average maximum between 19-20C, min around 12c.

Re: General May Weather
Conveyor belt and block all in place. Next one looking quite solid at 500 hPa on Wednesday morning over NZ. Models are now starting to lock onto the polar jet fracturing and interacting with the subtropical jet on Saturday with the 4th upper low in the sequence. This is a recipe for a cut off low
MS will be looking at this one closely in the upper atmosphere I would think, especially if it gets moisture.

Re: General May Weather
Metservice has issued a rare high risk of severe t storms for Wellington for tonight. Thoughts on this? I think Taranaki is more likely to get them.
