We started the day at Salina,Kansas but it all looked very messy so we relocated to southwest Kansas, some nice storms on our travels today.
We are staying at Greensburg, Kansas tonight, a rebuilt modern town now after the big tornado 9 years ago.

Bust today in terms of Tornadoes but very early on we could tell it wasnt looking good with convection going up all over the place very early on. We witnessed a nice Tornado warned cell and followed the wall cloud thru to Greensburg.

Looking at SPC reports, the cb in the first photo above produced hail stones in excess of 2 inches on the Interstate 30, a few miles ahead of us at time of photo.

Yesterday was meant to be a down day relocating from KS to the TX panhandle. Ended up chasing the tornado warned south of the cell you were on Steven. Unfortunately we didn't quite get to it early enough due to a speeding ticket from the local Sheriff in Junction. Because of this ended up have the storm catch us up on the I10 turning day into night. The heaviest rain I've ever seen with the occasional gold ball mixed in. IN Llano this morning and will chase todays TX play, although at the speed limit ths time! ;)

5% tornado risk on TX today. Heading to Midland

We run into a hail storm yesterday at Trent/I20 and the traffic was scattering in all directions. A car headed for cover at the gas station ended up half submerged in a drainage ditch due to surface water obscuring the entry. A little bit funny to see. Pays not to panic in severe weather!

Convection in the last two days has been a level or two down on what we experienced last week.

Yes, NZ does not have the geography for the USA style convection. But then I think USA is unique in the world for its thunderstorms. The Gulf of Mexico/desert SW/Rocky mtns all manipulate the atmosphere over the great plains for extreme convection.

Currently at Sydney on our way home.
Some storms developed around Dallas Airport yesterday afternoon/evening with some very close lightning strikes to farewell us from the US. A really great trip this year. Good luck to all those still chasing.

Looks to be the chance of thunder in Auckland for our return home.

June can typically be quite active but not a lot in the modelling so far this month.

The convection over Oklahoma today is supporting 3cm hail, but by tornado alley standards that is weak convection.

Crazy heat in US around the Albuquerque region with maximums of 38C predicted tomorrow - that doesn't sound that hot until you realise Albuquerque is 1600m asl which would equate to a sea-level temperature of around 54C!!

There is a short wave crossing the central plains early this week. Chasers will get two bites of the cherry, day 1 western Kansas tomorrow, day two eastern Kansas.
