Since someone asked (via e-mail), the depth of the water outside was approximately 190mm above our inside floor level, not 190mm above the ground and only just above floor level.
There is a high point between the two sides of the house, we have created a race to water between the two sides, but it wasn't wide enough to prevent the built up on the driveway side. Probably just as well, as the other side had enough build up that it came in there!
I'm hoping we are about to get premission to lower the top on the retaining wall into the neighbours slightly, the flooding doesn't affect them as badly, their house is a pole platform, and they have good drainage off their property.
It's still raining, and increasing in intensity, I noticed it's swung round to the East now, I hope we aren't in for a repeat.

I saw it from Devonport...looked impressive.Missed that late afternoon Cb out to our East, was inside working.
I notice on the midday sounding for Auckland yesterday there some reasonable wind shear there. No doubt this wind shear assisted in the development of the cb's allowing rainfalls like 67mm in an hour to occur.

the rain radar shows that heavyu rain area moved up and over the coromendal overnight, and is now in the north hauraki gulf, rotating around the low center there
wish we could have had just 10mm more here to help things out...oh well, its May now, there should be more on the horizon soon, LOL
I see whakatane area got around 50mm too

For a contrast (didn't want to open a new topic) - our mates in the West Island have been having a toasty time this year...Manukau heads observer wrote:that sure is alot of rain

I thought for a moment (before properly reading the post) that you'd made a typo and put 'street lightning'The blue in the photo below is sheet lightning and the yellow is street lighting.
I guess these downpours must've been pretty intense, so as to result in localised surface flooding, rather than generalised flooding with rising rivers etc. For example Mt Maunganui is separate from any rivers flowing from the inland hills, and I can't recall any significant streams on the Mount itself, so there must've been an intense downpour right there.

Sorry, I was at nightschool when it happened & my camera was at work.03 Stormchaser wrote:post a picture
I don't have any pictures I can show you.
If you watched TV One news, the guy who waded out of the double garage and was later heard saying we were lucky to get stuff out is an employee where I used to work. I couldn't get home due to the flooding and went there as I knew they were prone to flooding to see if I could help. They bent the living daylights out of the garage door opening it due to the weight of the water on it, but they needed to as it had a new $40,000 vehicle in there that belonged to a customer. It had over a metre of water in there within a couple of minutes of then getting it out.
The insurance company isn't very happy as they had just made repairs to the last flooding damage a couple of months ago.

Cheers for the link! I'd never have seen it otherwise.
BTW, didn't some wag place an alien toy or similar near that webcam a few years back, and is it still there?

The tour company that operates the tours on White Island is beleived to be responsible to placing a little purple dinosaur in the camera image. It got them international media attention and apparently has helped their business quite a lot.Gary Roberts wrote:BTW, didn't some wag place an alien toy or similar near that webcam a few years back, and is it still there?
As the camera is located in an off limits area, and the crew who placed it there are the same crew who transport the crew who maintain it I imagine it's likely to last a while (It was still there last time I looked).
Oh, and it's not the Barney figure most parents love to hate, it Fred Flinstones pet Dino.
