The 7.6 earthquake the other day surly not affect the falt lines and ring of fire as all plates join together of course depending on the focal depth of the earthquake and how far off the coast of NZ as to wether it would affect fault lines.
In the past large earthquakes have set off other large quakes a few days after the first quake the 24th December 2004 quake off Auckland islands in the farr south of the south island measured at 8.2 on the scale was then followed two days after by the boxing day quake off Indonesia of 9.3 causing the tsuanmi. Which is what could also happen with other plates and fault lines.
A big enough earthquake of 9 on the scale would be enough to errupt mt taranaki or any others breaking the inner core of the mountain and pushing the magma up the chamber as said by whats his name

ahh cant remember he's with geonet the guy with the lisp

he was also on that program are you ready a documentry for disaster NZ.
However we can't prepare ourselves or be warned if an earthqauke strikes because it happens when it happens where as a comet as Gary mentioned we would know about it with all the technology NASSA has up there.

How can people say an earthquake is over due?? Since when did we know when one was arriving!!

by knowing when an area last had one, and if they occured at regular intervals (approx) or not, you can get an idea of when the next one is due (accurate to decades)....it might be 20 years or 50 years before the big one in wellington...or longer...?

At the risk of being pedantic, we can only say that it will probably happen...and it's even possible that it never will. The next major groundshaker in the Wellington region might not occur until the planet is destroyed when the Sun dies, several billion years from now. Maybe even then the ground might remain steady.

Too many people make claims that cannot be supported by facts. To say that Wellington will definitely be hit by a large Earthquake, soon or later, is conjecture based upon historical precedent, and not fact.

I reckon we should be striving to apply scientific method, rather than repeating the mistakes and fallacies of the pseudo-scientists who are so successful at grabbing the media's attention.
