Mostly light to mod rain here, 38mm over 24hrs. Dewpoints are a humid 18C.
Satellite pic suggests we may get some heavy showers building in from the NW this evening.

Edit 3.25pm Rain heavy now with a fresh to strong NE

Fortunately looks like the heavy rain is clearing Northland for now, well western anyway... yes, reports are coming in of bad flooding, buildings washed away at Haruru falls etc, emergency services having a hard time getting in.. News will be worth a watch tonight!

I'm getting a lot of noise on the boltek from this rain which points to it being from quite deep Cb convection now, the sort of thing that is usually not far from a thunderstorm.. Convection and lightning is very active out west to sea

Here in Takapuna we've had rain on & off for most of the day - torrential rain for the last 90 minutes or so, but now easing... The roads will be chaos tonight.

It was weird driving home this evening.

I drove into sunlight, had to put my sunnies on. Very dark towards the east, garnished by a delightful rainbow, however, brilliant sunshine and blue skies to the west.

Sounds like there were some really good key ingrediants to create that moisture in such a short time especailly over Northland.
I also heard on the radio about trees down due to high winds so how strong were the E-NE winds up there? also a report of a lightning strike hitting a tree near Kaitaia somewhere.
Overcast here again today but not cold making it to 18C although very isolated light rain or drizzle patches where it was rather dry in more eastern suburbs and perhaps central city but wet out near the airport and the port hills.
All we had was a few spits around mid afternoon other then that quite dry considering rain was forecast and yet 5 minutes up the road the grounds were wet.
Looks like it may swing more N-NW by the weknd for a change.
Cheers
Jason.

It may have been a drought breaker in Northland, but the drought is still biting here in North Canterbury - 14mm so far this month, 5mm last month, 51mm since the beginning of the year, most of that in the first two weeks of January. :(

we got gusts to 39kts here Jason, but more exposed places along northlands east coast would have been stronger than that
the station I have on the western coast here is on top of a 700 foot hill that is very exposed to the NEer....58 kts record there last night (pressure wind (the barometer suddenly jumped up as the wind dropped a bit)

a photo of the back of the (2nd) front (notice one nice big boil up), and showing fog sitting over the city in a wave like pattern :)
Ricky got 2x the rain total we got , as the rain petered out over our area all the time --interesting dynamics happening yesterday!

Sunny and warm in Chch for a change in Chch this morning (after early fog cleared) - flow must've gone more northerly.

I guess there has been some really big surf on the northeastern coasts from this storm.

i guess the rain quickly eased from auckland south because that is where the front turned into a warm front, being SE of the low center that was west of northland
