yes i saw that. The queestown webcam turns grey on metservice engulfed in cloud with the temp of 0.4 degrees so one can only assume that if it they are producing precipitation that its in the form of snow.

Looks to have been a thunderstorm embedded in there too ice maiden going by the trackers, a brief but weak one.
I was looking at the maps tonight in thinking a simular thing may happen here tomorrow morning with a few CB's spilling out and towards BP.
Its a rather busy day tomorrow with troughs and fronts crossing even though it will be NW it should be unstable enough to produce a few weak ones  .
Early next week still looks interesting, not much precipitation at this stage though so i am thinking a simular situation to last weekend perhaps.
Cheers

Yes, christchurch is going to be ok for next couple of days with gusty northwesters. Theres a slim chance of few showers spreading of the western ranges tonight...only slim though. The wind is certainly going to help with the drying out process. Maybe sleet late sunday into monday, tuesday and even wednesday in my own opinion. Have to wait and see. Even looks like another interesting system following from next weekend on. People reckon this winter is following the pattern of 1992, certainly ski field amounts would imply that. If this is the case im sure everyone remembers August 31st 1992! I was only 4 years old, it was 3 days till my 5th birthday and i had a tricycle in the backyard and overnight we had the most huge snow dump that i couldnt even find my tricycle! I finally found it when i stubbed my toe :D

Gee you have a fond memory there Mark how old r u now? I remember the year of the 1992 snowfall our driveway made for a fun slide on our hill.
From memory we had about 36cm of snow it sure was deep even though i was a small wee bugger.
The weekend is looking fine for once and no cold overnight lows, it wont be too warm during the days though as that NW wind is coming off the deeply covered alps.

Seems like the West Coast is feeling the brunt of this icy blast. Temps in Westland and Fiordland this afternoon were in the low singles, so snow must've been down to unusually low levels. And more to come tomorrow. Chch's expected high of 11C is pretty normal for this time of year, but cold for the northwesterly forecast.

The funny thing about this storm is that the coldest air seems to be sweeping over NZ tomorrow, and by the time the low has moved far enough to the east to alllow southerlies over the South Island, snow levels are only expected down to about 500m according to Metservice. Maybe warmer air is expected to flow around the south of the low and into the southerlies on its western side.

She often tramps this time of the year but I guess she just got caught out and the boss would only give her those days off.

I see Tony is looking at lower level snow next week now for Canty than the Metservice. I wouldn't be surprised, must be a massive amount of cold air with seemingly record snowfalls lining up the alps while we bask in the milder dry weather. Slight frost this mornign but warming up now with some patchy high NW cloud
