Looks to be a break in the anticyclonic pattern mid next week with a moist low coming in from the north. Both the GFS and ECMRF point to that so there must be some credence. Hope it comes off.so sohuld get that fix well before the next lot of storms.

Hope it doesn't. Could leave a fair bit of muck around for Waitangi weekend.NZstorm wrote:Looks to be a break in the anticyclonic pattern mid next week with a moist low coming in from the north. I hope not! Big rebuild going on at a radio site up the Kaimais.
We are even moving the building to rebuild the foundations, then moving it back. New tower going up etc.
It would be cruel after all these good weekends.

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late January
Yes a definite SW flow for Auckland untill Monday when the flow goes NE.
No interesting weather on the horizon for NZ. The SSW change over NZ Sunday should be uneventful due to influence of upper ridging. A trough looks set to come close to northern NZ mid week though but looks like it will pass to our NE atm.

Quite a bit of variation between ECMWF and GFS with this Low.

Great sailing weather on Auckland harbour today for day 1 of the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series with a steady fresh South Westerly.
Watched some of the racing today which is very close to the shore line at times, will be a great series.

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late January
Looks like a strong inversion persists through the weekend. Inversion + SW breeze = lots of clouds. There was even some weak showers around this afternoon.

Yup it was a lousy day considering we have an anticyclone nearby. Quite thickly overcast at times today and even some spits of drizzle!

I'm guessing we've had over 250 hrs of sunshine for Jan so not bad, East to SE regime next week looks good for the City of Sails, will be wanting fresh winds for the sailing.

Looking a lot brighter for Auckland today.
Those 850mb temps will top 20C over the upper NI tomorrow which surely points to some big maximums in the BOP/Gisborne/HB.

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late Jan/early Feb
Very warm here under sunny skies today, just some high cloud. Temperature peaked at 27.9C at 1:17pm, remaining 27-28 for a while now - I think a light NE sea breeze prevented it rising any further. Otherwise would have been real hot!

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late Jan/early Feb
Looks like a surface ridge covers NZ this week and into next. The air stays relatively humid in the north this week. A weak upper trough moves across the country Thursday and looks like a chance of thunderstorms developing on any convergence that occurs over northern regions Thursday afternoon. This may be worth a thread in a day or two when there is better confidence of moisture levels. A strong upper ridge moves in for the weekend with hot temps likely inland and in the east.

Looks very cold over the SouthIsland this morning given the time of year and the recent hot weather.
At 7am Timaru and Dunedin only 5C under overcast skies. Oamaru 6C and Christchurch 8C.

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late Jan/early Feb
Looks like there could be something way out 7 days but thats as far as ill go with that.
Today has that look and feel as if we could get an afternoon shower. Yesterday there were some light showers between here and the Kaimais.
In the week that i have been back its become brown very quick. Still has nothing on last year but if no rain in the next 2 weeks it will be just as bad. 0.4mm in the last 14 days with 30mm evapotranspiration in just the last 7 days.

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late Jan/early Feb
Yea Jamie, the Cumulus Congestus is all fibrous topped, indicating that air levels up higher are quite warm to hence blocking the updraft of the cloud and spreading it outwards and making it fibrous looking.
Usually you can distinguish how warm the air layers are by looking at the top of the clouds.
The more clearcut looking the cloud is, the more unstable the air is.
Just wanted to share that with people who didn't know.

Re: Anticyclonic conditions late Jan/early Feb
Stunner day in Auckland - partly cloudy this morning then mainly clear skies and sunshine from about 10am. NE breeze didn't keep the temperature down though, reaching a very warm 27.0C at my place at 3pm. Dewpoints up to 18 this morning dropped to 15-16 this afternoon. Hoping the clearer skies will bring a cooler night tonight than the last three 19C nights. Hopefully the NE dies out.
I see the model suggest some activity coming onto the north in a week's time. Hopefully something does eventuate as we really need rain. Been 14 days since the last rain recorded now, very dry...

Some light showers have just developed around the Hamilton area. Very low topped. Best one looks SE of here. Got one just to the north aswell.
