Re: General May weather
there must be some cooling aloft going on over the upper NI with the passage of the upper level high cloud
as there is some nice looking billowing/towering CU with hard edged bases
could keep on developing more?

Re: General May weather
Looks like another set up for possible thunderstorms over the upper North Island tomorrow(Northland/Auckland/Waikato/Bay of Plenty). Looks like a low to moderate chance set up, will give a more detailed prediction at the end of the day.

Re: General May weather
I see there is a severe weather watch out for heavy rain tomorrow, GFS implies there will not be much at all on the other hand

Re: General May weather
That's funny Leighton - where did you find that?!
Brian - yep I agree, looks ominous on the maps to the NW. Wow, the weather over the past few weeks has certainly been exciting for weather enthusiasts. Is it bad that I wouldn't mind a big anticyclone for a week or so?!

Re: General May weather
It was sent to me in an email from a friend. Maybe instead of a big anticyclone send a cold front up the east coast of the South Island for a change. I feel like we are missing out on all the action here (sky action that is), I mean the weather hasnt been ideal but no more than 4mm has fallen on a day in the last week here. At least no frosts have been occurring which I can certainly live with!Philip Duncan wrote:That's funny Leighton - where did you find that?!

GFS picking up yet another subtropical low late next week but topsy turvy at this stage as you would expect.

Re: General May weather
Next weeks low looks quite intense - more warm, humid, weather. May's heading into the record books if the cold air doesnt arrive in the second half of the month.

Re: General May weather
Cloud has been the dominant feature here in the past week but good to see the sun out today, still through at times. 15mm of rain since 18th April here (over 3 weeks ago)

Re: General May weather
Yes, I've been working in Christchurch since last weekend and have been a bit frustrated by the action weather elsewhere!
It's not easy trying to pick an interislander crossing for the weekend.. models still not much in agreement, which strong wind direction will be less rough? <g>

Great day for the start of the duck shooting season. Odd gunshot sound from first light around here this morning.

Re: General May weather
Heavier rain has set in early round here. Some slight surface flooding already apparent- our drainage system just can't cope even with moderate rain since the quakes

Re: General May weather
A heavy drizzle set in an hour ago with a few big drops in the last 10 mins,CHCH will have some big problems if they get too much of this.

Good 4.0 wobble just now, that'll help....NOT
Still rainign steadily...going to be some flooding issues later here
