Re: General May Weather
Reached our overnight minima around 10pm last night.. very cold fog descended on the rugby league field for the local game last night, it was pretty much abandoned after that & at barely 8ºc, I think the crowd appreciated it lol. Not quite as bad this morning as it was yesterday but it is very cool, misty yucky looking outside. IF it clears up, shouldn't be too bad a day.

Dizzly morning so far in Chch - seems to be only over the city according to radar. Just shows having a bigh high over you doesn't always mean fine, sunny weather.

Its interesting to see what the GFS is forecasting after this Tasman low pressure system pushes through.....
Possibility to be in a gap period (under no overly significant Low or High pressure system over the tasman).

Re: General May Weather
Overnight lows back up to 9.9C here just before midnight last night, but more like 11-12C by sunrise. Max-temp here was also back up to 19.7C yesterday arvo.
Interesting that last night's TV-temps didn't include Ardmore's 19.9C as Akld's high (18C for Akld Aero and Whenuapai), which would've equalled Kaitaia as the nation's top temp.

It has been a cold start to May with the dry cool airmass and the clear skies at night.

Re: General May Weather
Another sub 6ºc start this morning with the usual misty foggy stuff around.. only just clawing it's way into double digits now but when it all burns off it will be another glorious day. Tuesday beginning to look interesting for around here

Re: General May Weather
Looks like some humidity for the North Island Tuesday/Wednesday with dps 17C. Will make nighttime temps milder. Some rain for many places and with isolated thunder possible in the north.
The polar trough crossing Auckland/Northland Thursday might be worth watching out for with 500mb temps -24C modeled on todays GFS.

A real thick fog this morning which has helped keep the frost at bay,i reckon its going to be a lovely day knowing that a northerly air stream is developing over NZ

Re: General May Weather
A long way out but I think the trough early next week might be one to watch for thunderstorms also.
A fine start to the day here, currently 14C

Re: General May Weather
Was clear here this morning and is still sunny, but there's a thick bank of fog sitting about half a mile away.
A merry 2.5 degrees at the moment - had been a light frost earlier.

Re: General May Weather
Nice day out there today with plenty of sunshine and a NE that isnt cool which is a bonus. Watching the backhalf of this week with interest as could be some much needed persistent rain around eastern Canterbury. Fingers Crossed. Have just became a father as of Friday just been so an excuse to go driving in the rain can be to put her to sleep!

Re: General May Weather
Thanks Richard! Latest GFS showing a backing off in totals, however there has been some variability on this one so I wouldnt be surprised to see it back on track next run. Looks like rain or showers for much of NZ for a few days though for the extended outlook.Richard wrote:Congratulations Leighton yes some much needed rain coming alright

Re: General May Weather
GFS earlier run this morning is showing some very decent rainfall and I see Metservice have a watch now for this area. Just waiting for the one due through now to see what its plotting.

Re: General May Weather
Yes certainly looking like some good rain north of Christchurch, Hopfully some decent rain can make it this far south as it has been rather dry lately.
High of 11 degrees here today after a light frost followed by thick high cloud.
