Australian severe weather season 2012/13

Unread post by jamie »

On Sunday it was a clear day in Sydney and we were able to watch the storms develop to the south of Sydney. Was an impressive site. Just glad they never made it to the city for the cold play concert that night.

That was certainly an impressive storm from all the pictures coming from it.

00Z Brisbane sounding on the day of that hail storm. 00Z is about mid morning so no instability showing on the sounding yet.
But the significant parameter for large hail on this sounding is the shear.

Mildura reached 45.5C this afternoon at 15:37 LT, unofficially equalling it's November Victorian heat record set back in 17/11/1980.

^ I think that previous record for Mildura Airport in 1980 was actually be 44.5C, while nearby Mildura Post Office held Victoria's Nov record of 45.0C, set in 1905.

However, the small town of Ouyen (about 100km to the SE) appears to have pipped Mildura for the title of 'Victoria's hottest November day ever', with a staggering 45.8C recorded there yesterday.

Reports of damaging waterspout/tornado in the seaside town of Bargara, about 400 km north of Brisbane this arvo...

'At least two hurt as mini-tornado slams Bargara near Bundaberg' - The Courier Mail

EDIT: Make that 3 'tornadoes' (or microbursts?)...

Looking at some of the damage there.. I would say tornados.. albeit small. Have been following events there all day.. basically anything with a bit of punch coming onshore is dropping spouts all over the place. Part of me wants to be back there but this time, I am happy to be armchairing it :)

Latest reports are that there were 5-6 tornadoes in the area yesterday!

Also, a bouquet to the BoM for this comment from the updated link above (Dan Corbett take note :-$ )…
'Tornadoes hit coastal towns of Coonarr, Bargara and Burnett Heads, near Bundaberg' - Courier Mail

"We've had quite a lot of damage from the tornadoes, with major damage to shopping centres and powerlines down," Bureau of Meteorology technical forecaster Ken Kato said.

"I would not call them mini, they are proper tornados," he said.

The set up looked favourable for weak supercells/waterspouts/tornado. A similar set up to the Cairns twister a year ago.

Looks like eastern Aussie is getting all the weather for now!

Notice the RFD cut despite the deep layer tropical moisture.

Interesting to see an F2 tornado/supercell cb in a tropical environment.

On a side note and of alot less significance of what has been going on up north but we had a decent enough thunderstorm (severe warned) pass through the area a couple of hours ago, has so far dropped 18.8mm in which up to today had only had just over 4mm for January. Has also dropped the temperature down to a cool 15c.
