I see a 213km/h thunderstorm gust was recorded in eastern Sydney today. Possible tornado or wet microburst? Tennis ball hail was recorded as well. They are having an incredible thunderstorm season over there.

No, there doesn't seem to be much on you tube, but I have only had a quick look.jamie wrote:It was a Tornado.....have you not seen the videos?
Sydney gfs sounding showed a microburst set up with very moist air in the middle of the sounding and dry air below.

You need to get on Facebook. There are some amazing videos there. Also an awesome loop of the radar and the cell was spinning like crazy and did a big turn to the left. Amazing stuff.

Some pretty serious flash flooding hitting Avalon in Victoria this afternoon.
Brisbane area looking prime for severe thunderstorms Friday with all modes of severe weather possible. Good opportunity for NZ chasers to go on short notice.
Some Access-R progs:

Nice photo of the gust front over Melbourne yesterday morning. The polar trough brought severe storms/wind gusts to Melbourne.

Hope those gust fronts will develop some interesting weather, here, from later this month and June /July as these blocking highs move away from here later on, as oncoming weather systems develop in their eastward transitions.

An interesting story here about coastal erosion of properties along the North Sydney coast in the big weekend storm. Many of the home owners are likely not covered by insurance as Australian insurance policies typically didn't cover damage caused by actions of the sea, such as coastal erosion, king tides or storm surges.

There is a good looking Winter system showing up for SE Australia later next week, good snowfalls looking possible for their ski fields.

Some decent snowfalls for the ski areas from this system, up to 60cm for Thredbo apparently. Some low level snow today in the usual places over SE Australia.
500mb temps as low as -33C over Melbourne today.

I see Darwin Aero recorded 34.6C yesterday, making it its hottest June day on record.
Quite a contrast to the cold outbreak further south though. Yesterday Sydney only reached 12C and Melbourne just 10C. While on Sunday Canberra only managed 8.0C, after starting the day on -5.1C.

Re: General July Weather
Did it rain in Darwin on Wednesday? That was an interesting system - intense surface high over the continent with an intense upper trough moving well into the tropics. The NT had a decent NW jet over them, and strong surface SE winds. Mid-latitude weather in the deep tropics. The same trough is helping with the little development off the tropical Queensland coast. A few days of unsettled weather for that area, then back to normal sometime next week.RWood wrote:Enjoyed 4 days of glorious 28C sunny conditions in Townsville, interrupted by a predicted cloudy day with some light pm rain. Should be back to normal soon. Darwin had one of its very rare overcast July days.

Re: General July Weather
No rain in Darwin when I last checked. Here in Townsville - which has had a very dry 14 months overall - Wednesday 30C tmax followed by overcast Thursday and steady light rain from 3pm. Stopped now and day may be brighter than the forecast showery conditions. Temperature drop was a bit of a shock. Getting 2 cloudy to overcast days in Darwin in July was a rarity.tunster wrote:

I see Townsville only reached 15C yesterday. Almost unbelievably cold for a coastal location at 19 degrees latitude! Hong Kong can pull that off but is a bit more poleward and has a huge cold continent to help it out. A large part of the North Island would have been warmer than Townsville yesterday, which probably doesn't happen in July very often.
According to this (http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/ ... _All.shtml) the lowest ever maximum in July for Townsville is 16.4C. Yesterday could have been a record? Unless it's 9AM to 9AM in which case it will be a close run thing.

Re: Australia storm season 2015/16
Yesterday is being called a record low for Townsville. A shock after days topping out at 30C earlier on. 2015 was the driest year on record with less than 400mm of rain but March marked a change with 558mm and June had a 40mm event. We would be happy to return here - the coastal CBD with beaches and Strand district is very pleasant. Lots of people dining outdoors at all hours including refugees from Victoria et al.

Pretty certain those historical records are from 9am to 9am. Townsville was back up to 16.7C at 8:40am this morning (LT), so not a record based on that time-frame.
Edit: Make that 17.2C at 9am this morning.
