I notice the wind direction is switching between NE and SW at home right now, might be something about to blow up out east in a convergence zone...

From the radar it looks like we should have had heavy rain and hail at home. Yet just some moderate rain. Must have been right on the edge

Perfect timing. Just as things were about to kick off, I had to work. I was in Papakura, inside, and had no idea what was happening outside.

Lucky people. I think there will be more, as the Auckland area usually gets more thunderstorms because of it's position in certain areas of atmosphere movement in the west to east movement of our weather systems.
The area can be a drawcard.

Heavy 4.5mm, 10 minute downpour around 7am this morning.

did you see the waterspouts?

Those waterspouts were on the north side of Waiheke Island and the photos would have been taken from a vantage point on the Island.

A convergent boundary, possibly a front crossing from the west generated the waterspouts. The surface boundary generates the vorticity that is taken up by convection currents. Sea temperatures in the gulf are 20C, so good for convection.
