Big thunderstorm in Hawke's Bay today. Haven't seen one this strong here before. Continuous fork lightning and thunder, and accumulating hail. Temp drop from 14 degrees to 4 degrees in 30 minutes!

I see that the temp in Napier was only 4C at one point this afternoon, very unusual for Napier.tich wrote: Tue 01/10/2019 20:24Napier at the time of the storm was colder than the summit of the Napier-Taupo Highway (where it was 6C), according to MetService temperature obs map.Temp drop from 14 degrees to 4 degrees in 30 minutes!
Hope the hail didn't damage any fruit crops there.

Re: General October Weather
I find the winter storm season May to September has the best thunderstorm odds for Auckland. October to April they seem to occur much less.tornado wrote: Tue 01/10/2019 19:34 when will we get a storm in auckland again. all we get now is dud days.
I would be happy to see drier sunnier weather now and latest gfs has only 15mm for Auckland next 15 days.

Re: General October Weather
That's one of the main reasons why ngai Tahu are setting up an experimental orchard in an area of the ex-Balmoral forest, never getting the large hail, though I do wonder if climate change will see an increase in the size of the small hail. Apples and pears do so well every season but peaches nectarines and apricots would still need some frost protection, but again the way the frosts are going getting lighter, they may well become a crop of the future too.

I see the MS October outlook is looking like they expect nothing much outside the ordinary, a pretty average looking month to paraphrase their words

Radar again looking interesting near the Waimak. Heavy rain now up here and fairly gusty.
Another strong southerly lining up for the weekend as well. Quite the week.

Re: General October Weather
South westerly ramping up nicely here. Locally, going on MetService's website projected temperatures over the next 5 days, that would be roughly a daily mean temperature drop of 2.5c compared to the first week of October 2018.

Re: General October Weather
Nothing much down here. Looked ominous around 7am to the south but nothing much to get enthused about so i went back to bed.
Came onto rain with a bit of a southerly in the morning then cleared up.
