Not sure who owns the NZStormchaser Logo, but I have an idea I'm considering that I'd like to include it on.

Didn’t go with the Houston option?Rogue wrote:Have just booked this years trip, arrive on 17 May, depart 6 June, in and out of Dallas. Hopefully 19 days of great chasing!

Flying to USA has never been cheaper, the coronavirus will be adding to the price war.

Na, stuck with the Dallas option, which although a longer flight and over-all journey, is a better location (particularly at the end of the trip) and cheaper. The 17 hour Dallas to Sydney leg is bloody torture though.

19 dead in Nashville tornado late yesterday.
Nashille 06Z forecast sounding here. The SALR has been plotted incorrrectly but you can see there was chunky CAPE and good wind shear.

2 of the Tennessee tornadoes were rated EF4 and another EF3. So quite significant and the SPC undercooked the forecast although they did mention a tornado risk. Cat 2 severe with 5% torn.

Coronovirus is spreading fast in the USA now
travel to the USA might become a problem for this years storm chasers?

I'm hoping it won't be. I figure by then the Pandemic should be well established, so travelling shouldn't be problematic (I hope).

Assess the situation closer to departure time
I'm thinking insurance is going to be the issue as healthcare in USA is exorbitantly expensive.

Airlines may start to cancel flights if their bookings are too low. I agree this year may not be the year for travelling overseas but I will hang onto to my flight bookings for now.

Re: USA Weather & travel to the US on weather related matters 2020
Yes, that is the real risk. Healthcare, a outbreak won't be covered by travel/health insurance, so that is my real concern. However, if I've had it & recovered, the pandemic has done it's thing, then hopefully it won't be an issue. Time will tell.

Trump has closed the border to people travelling from Europe for the next 30days, will this flow into May?

Doesn’t include uk at this stage. Wonder how they control that? Would be very easy to travel to a country that has access then fly from there.
Can’t help but think I’ve chosen a good year to not go.

Re: USA Weather & travel to the US on weather related matters 2020
Reality is, this virus, so far, isn't as bad as media are presenting it. Yes, statistically, it's mortality rate is higher than a typical annual flu version. However, from what I can ascertain, it's no where near as easy to contract as a typical flu. Even then, odds are you will survive ok.
I'm hoping, the pandemic will travel the globe (including our area), I'll get it & recover ok, by the time the US StormCation is on It'll no longer be of concern.
Wait and see applies. However, come a week or so from my planned departure, without having had & recovered from this virus, I'm sad to admit, this years chase (for me at least), is likely off.
Sadly, I can't get any insurance that will cover the risk the situation presents.

Looking at the 15 day gfs its getting thundery in the US with some severe days during the period. Pity this season is looking toast for international chasers, it might be a good one.
