If that's true on the day of a forecast then someone needs firing at Metservice for letting such poor information stay online
Given how steadily its falling right now I believe a warning is appropriate

Re: Possible Snow event North Canterbury 17-19th June
We do have a developing low above us so it is possible we could get near to 80-100mm, We are long over due for such an event. 100+mm events were more common for Canterbury during the later half of last century than this century.

Interesting as that's the sum total of the rain there in the past 6 months!

Re: Possible Snow event North Canterbury 17-19th June
If they genuinely believed Christchurch would be getting 100mm there would have been a warning put out by now or at least a watch - it's a computer error that needs human intervention to temper the results being spat out by obviously a rogue computer model run...

At the end of the day they ARE only forecasting another 10-15mm today in Christchurch, the data you are referring to is tomorrow so let's all just stay calm and wait for the Metservice to do it's thing

Warning out for Kaikoura/Marlborough coast for 100-150mm from 4pm today to 11am tomorrow - I'm in Kaikoura until Saturday. It's been raining steadily but moderately this morning so far, after the southerly came through overnight.

Re: Possible Snow event North Canterbury 17-19th June
Been clear here in town for a while and eastern suburbs have had very little rain at all, looking at the radar it looks to be clearing out completely over Christchurch in the next hour or two

Heavy rain now in Kaikoura, this is us for the next 24 hours
Edit - backed off a little to moderate rain now, but it'll pick up again.

Strong gusty SE winds here in Nelson, bordering on gale force at times and seems to be gradually strengthening as the flow gets established.
Just occasional light showers also.

Re: Possible Snow event North Canterbury 17-19th June
Concerned about this potential rainfall in North Canterbury and Christchurch tonight and tomorrow.. if I'm honest I cant see much getting anywhere past Amberley.
In saying that if 60mm falls in the city in the space of 12 hours so.. would cause issues.

Moderate rain continues in Kaikoura, but the heaviest falls are projected for this evening into the morning. Can't see the mountains at all.

Looking at current radar images, I cannot fathom how the projected rainfall can occur from what is currently on radar, and just off the coast...

Re: Possible Snow event North Canterbury 17-19th June
It isn't picking up the rain here that well, we've rained reasonably solidly today here though we've just hit a slight pause. Heavier stuff now approaching via the central North Island and Wellington, but let's see if it eventuates as the models are predicting.snowchaser01 wrote: ↑Thu 18/06/2020 16:58Looking at current radar images, I cannot fathom how the projected rainfall can occur from what is currently on radar, and just off the coast...

Good point, my current thoughts are Kaikoura Coast/Ranges and maybe Amberley north at a push... Can't see it all the way down here.Chris W wrote: ↑Thu 18/06/2020 17:05It isn't picking up the rain here that well, we've rained reasonably solidly today here though we've just hit a slight pause. Would be funnytalbotmj15 wrote: ↑Wed 17/06/2020 14:18 On that. Big meeting at 6pm. Castlehill village. NZTA and Selwyn Mayor fronting up. Hall holds 40 odd people. Yet word is hundreds are expected. Lol.
Would be a laugh if NZTA got caught up there by snow and isaacs closed the road. Lol. Hahaha
I see they don't allow chains any more.
Thank goodness for the railway. We didn't have any issues during snowfall events when I was driving trains on the Midland Line, you just ploughed through it..
