Yes, largely running their own grid since the second world war. There are a few interconnects, but they aren't big enough to transfer the kind of power they needed.

Texas is a big state but the thunderstorms are bigger.

A report of 2 inch hailstones north of Dallas yesterday. The severe thunderstorm season about to start over there.
