No hail here however the core appears to be slightly inland from town.Lawrence wrote: Tue 18/10/2022 14:42 Dark to the South of here.Few spots of precipitation.Duvet at the ready to throw over the greenhouse if we get reports of large hail.![]()

Visual on sheets of hail bands to the east and south east.Could be possibly Rolleston, Lincoln area. Just a rumble of thunder and wind slightly picked up here now.

Re: General October Weather
Nothing down here except for a hail/graupel shower about an hour ago. Much colder and non-interesting looking cloud.

I'm at work in Wigram, sure is getting dark out there. Clouds looking ominous, glad I didn't bike to work today.dogmelon wrote: Tue 18/10/2022 15:04 I can hear distant thunder from honrby. It looks a bit grumpy and high based.

Re: General October Weather
Lower-level wind seems to be moving from East to west now, seems more on shore and picked up considerably now, looking weird out towards Banks Peninsular way.

Re: General October Weather
Sure is a weird shifting wind direction. Sort of thing I'd expect with a much bigger storm?Lawrence wrote: Tue 18/10/2022 15:27 Lower-level wind seems to be moving from East to west now, seems more on shore and picked up considerably now, looking weird out towards Banks Peninsular way.![]()

Re: Canterbury T-storms - Oct 18
Amberley is about to get dumped upon... Big cell to the west incoming.
Edit 2 - a brief period of torrential rain and small hail has eased, and thunder now booming rather than crackling. Looks like Amberley took a direct hit.

Good posting there Tony. Go0d that you were on the spot to record it.
Nothing much down here with the southerly Initially looked promising but after the hail/graupel shower on the arrival of the southerly the clagg moved in with a drop in temperature.
Here are some pictures from here prior to the arrival of the front.

Re: Canterbury T-storms - Oct 18
The storms seemed to hand off as the front charged north along with the abrupt upper air change, rather than a few storms moving up from Ashburton.
Some brilliant lightning overhead at work and steady rain large drops no hail though.
Managed to get these 3 shots of lightning while standing there for about 10 minutes.
The first one was a big CG that I caught a second fork of.
I did mention on here a few days ago that today might produce storms and I'm glad it pulled off.

Re: Canterbury T-storms - Oct 18
Certainly a good start to the Canterbury season. The last time we had a start like this was in 2013.. where we ended up having one of the best seasons including 3 or 4 supercell severe days in summer.
Interesting to note looking back at the wind flags a keen Easterly ramped up at 3pm when that storm got going over the city today.
I couldn't get out to chase as was working however I did get some shots below. Not the best.
Aaron Wilkinson captured an absolute beauty..one of the best he's got which he sent to a group chat tonight, I'll get him to share on here when he's able

Re: Canterbury T-storms - Oct 18
I'm still chasing if a storm presents itself and it has been a while! Cool chase today, lots of lightning, loud thunder and hail showers. But lightning photography is hard with getting rain drops on the lens in amongst a dozen other issues. But I got one, took this near Ashley, North Canterbury
