We had a "thunderwave" when we were up at Lower Hutt in July. 4 days of thunderstorms moving across from the seas off the Kapiti coast.
I call it "A Feast"

Looks likely it was mostly around the Wairarapa area today judging by MS rain radars. It would be good to have MS's lightning strikes on their Website rather than the Blitz or other lightning recorders. I still use the old fashioned AM band for sferics for lightning.None today.
I see most action occurred out in the Tasman Sea.

I have changed the thread title to include the next few days, thunderstorm risk 16th-20th.

Only isolated thunderstorm activity for NZ today. Very little heating here today and some light rain to put a dampener on thunderstorm potential. We did have a heavy shower here mid afternoon giving a very quick 10mm and there are some quite heavy convergence showers over central Auckland currently.

See what the next few days can bring.

Will be some surface flooding around Hamilton city on the next hour.
The heavy line moving over longitudinally which is far worse than transverse.Image

Some nice T Cu around late afternoon. 22mm here this afternoon, had a couple of heavy shower lines cross.

More in the way of sunshine tomorrow for Auckland, watch for an afternoon convergence zone.

Quite a threatening clagg here but came to little apart from a small amount of drizzle. Another 3 hours of so the rain band currently moving over Blenheim will arrive. So need it.

Today's risk from the MS
A large low over the Tasman Sea is expected to begin moving slowly onto the country during Saturday. Humid and unstable conditions continue in many places.

There is at least a low risk of thunderstorms over all the North Island and northern and western parts of the South Island today, but especially this afternoon and evening.

For the north and central parts of the North Island, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms from afternoon. These thunderstorms may produce localised heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 25 mm per hour and medium size hail. There is a low risk of these thunderstorms becoming severe about Northland, Auckland, eastern Waikato, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, also the ranges of northern Hawke's Bay and Gisborne, with downpours of 25 to 40 mm per hour.

For Whanganui, Manawatu, Horowhenua, Wairarapa including the Tararua District, and parts of Kapiti and Wellington, as well as Buller, inland and western areas of Nelson and Marlborough, inland in the north of Westland and northern Canterbury High Country, there is a moderate risk of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, bringing localised heavy rain with intensities of 10 to 25 mm per hour and medium sized hail.

Absolutely horrendous weather here overnight. Unfortunately a lone grass grub had jammed the tipping bucket in the weather station,so consequently I have no idea of the amount of rain we have currently received.

Just cleared and it's now working again. _b

Just received a direct hit here in Ashhurst, I don't have a gauge reading of how much rain we got but I would estimate about 40 mm in 30 mins. Phenomenal rain and a spectacular "bolt from the blue" from the cloud top as it departed. Bloody great 👍

Core of the storm passed a few km west of here but definitely the best in these parts for some time. Heaps of thunder, unfortunately never saw any bolts - just sheet lightning

We got it here pretty good in otahuhu! Power out. Torrential rain with what sounded like fairly decent sized hail mixed in and strong wind gusta right as I was putting bub to bed
