Re: Yet Another Low (maybe followed by sub-low) 15th -22nd May
Still the odd shower wafting on through now and then, havnt had any significant hail showers here abit of grapel at times but its been mainly more sleety with a few brief flakes.
Yes the snow level will be around 400m by Friday/Saturday, the flow is more SE and the pressure is abit higher too.
Certainly can't complain what this blast has brought us, yet we still have another 3 months of winter to come and even outside that until November atleast where winter can still come back in occasionally.
Just a few photo's of some Mamatus clouds around late morning.

The closest we've had to a proper snow flurry coming through Central ChCh now. Is now settling.

Cool 7°C presently... no wind quite still out there, looking east there's a warm orange glow in the morning skies... and if your up with clear skies overhead you will see the cresent moon, venus and mars, beautiful.

thank's for posting those (did you take anymore?) I like mammatus clouds.

Very good dusting on snow hill,s a few cars around city have snow on their windscreens, it will be upper cashmere residents. Heavy sleet beginning to fall here in Halswell now, radar act looks better this morning than it did yesterday afternoon. I would say another 2cm or so could settle at top of hills this morning.

Tis a bit funny. Snow fall up high throughout the Southern Alps has been phenomenal during this system. A sign of what winter is going to be like? haha.

Don't worry you jaffas all sound the same to me. If theres more snow on the alps thats where it should be and I hope it stays there all winter for the climbers!

Re: Yet Another Low (maybe followed by sub-low) 15th -22nd May
Went up the hills at 9am this morning and it was snowing heavy at Victoria Park. the entire road to the playground part was covered and it got thicker as i got closer to the carpark area. Luckily i could turn there cause i was starting to worry that i would get stuck with no chains up there. Very good dusting on hills from here with the cloud lifted.

Snowing heavily at Victoria Park? You've just confused all the Aucklanders. That's in the centre of the city.MarkThomas wrote:Went up the hills at 9am this morning and it was snowing heavy at Victoria Park. the entire road to the playground part was covered and it got thicker as i got closer to the carpark area. Re: Yet Another Low (maybe followed by sub-low) 15th -22nd May
It looks like this system isnt finished with us yet, just as the sun makes an appearance and the cloud and showers pack thier bags another series of fronts is lining up to the south.
Strong to gale force winds look likely to return by tomorrow and into Saturday, MS has a watch out for Banks Peninnsula from early tomorrow morning.
Showers will continue tomorrow some hail maybe and snow around the 300-400m mark, but its Saturday that seems to go down the gurgler.
Blue Skies warn of possible heavy snow down to 300m, obviously its a possibility at this stage but if thats the case then lighter falls could well fall to around 200m with sleet lower down.
South Island farmers will be hoping for a fat high to stick around for awhile before the next system comes through.

Re: Yet Another Low (maybe followed by sub-low) 15th -22nd May
There is some risk of a warm advection event on Saturday, so the snow levels will be lower than they seem from the model data, and the intensities will be higher. Also some orographic affect as the flow tends SE, so could be quite heavy falls for the inland hills and ranges.Jasestrm wrote:Blue Skies warn of possible heavy snow down to 300m, obviously its a possibility at this stage but if thats the case then lighter falls could well fall to around 200m with sleet lower down.

3 degrees here now and rain on the way, moving rather quickly up the east coast. I know there is only talk of snow tomorrow to 400 or 500m but given the air has had no time to really warm up i wouldnt be surprised if snow fell to around 200-250m overnight with maybe some more at the top of the port hills tomorrow.
