Looking back at the Himawari Sat Archives of yesterdays storm, the storm cells made Whakatane go into Sunset about 30 to 40 minutes earlier because of the shadow cast.
The B/W Vis image picked this up quite well.

Quite a good multicell storm with 3 or 4 individual cells developing before 8PM, with rock solid updrafts. Quite impressive considering the environment it developed in.

That's a local fire Richard, out to the north east of Amberley I believe. Sirens going mad.

Yes. The article was in the Timaru Herald/Press yesterday.
Thanks for posting it.
I tried to post it on the 2019 MetService thread but it didn't work.

The Oz fires have relentlessly landed smoke here for many days in the past couple of weeks. So hazy and quite irritating on the eyes running on the Port hills

I noticed it looked smoky here yet again on my evening walk. Sun was glowing orange as it moved towards the horizon

The storms of the last few days have knocked a few of the fires off thank goodness. Skies cleared away this afternoon, headed up your way David

One reason suggested for why we're in a warm spell.

Met Service likely misquoted there. The hot airmass that is favouring the fires is crossing the Tasman onto NZ giving us the warm start to summer.
The hot airmass is obviously coming from the Australian desert.

An upper level trough crossing the North Island from later Thursday into Friday. Thunder possibilities.

Surely means bush fire smoke reaching NZ, certainly not the bush fire heat. There seems to be a lot of weather stories these days.

There was talk on FB yesterday that the heat was because of the fires, seems a lot of people lack just basic common sense, some did believe bush fires did heat up the air mass.

Smoke is back again this morning looking to the SW, but its rather streaky and not evenly spread out like yesterday

The Australian smoke reduces the suns strength so probably slightly weaker heating from the sun.

Super thick arch cloud this morning, in for another warm one in Canterbury today. Yesterday Amberley reached 29C on my car thermometer, NIWA were reporting 30 across several sites.

When the air blowing out from the outback is already hot the amount of heat from those fires is just minuscule compared to the over all depth of the air mass. Also the most intense fires are going to reach up to greater heights thus losing heat more rapidly.

Due to the dark colour would the smoke absorb heat from the sun?

The upper trough coming in tomorrow may bring a storm or two into the west of the upper NI late in the day.

Locally, my year to date rainfall is on 754mm. It could be worse, MS's North Shore site at Whangaparaoa is currently on 678mm.

My yearly record lowest rainfall was set in 2015 at 843mm (records back to 2001).
