so Auckland recorded more sunshine hours than Tauranga?

^ Bear in mind that Tauranga, Wellington and Christchurch still use the old manual C/S sunshine recorders, whereas Auckland, Hamilton and Dunedin are EWS's, with the latter usually tending to favour relatively higher readings.

Tauranga's numbers in recent years have been lower than in the recent past and I regard them as suspect anyway - probably site obstruction changes or equipment deterioration. An AWS/EWS change will undoubtedly change the relationship with Auckland. The site most suffering from still being manual seems to be Alexandra, where each site change has been a lowering.
The new EWS/AWS at Bromley, Ch'ch is predictably showing higher values than Ch'ch Aero in its first month.
