Travelling through Waitaki Valley: windy, cold, raining, visibility 400 metres at times; muddy rivulets trickling down farm tracks etc and some puddles on paddocks near Waimate. Wintry!

Yea saw that today. Very nice. Is this rainfall recorded from your weather or is it rainfall estimated by radar? Or both?

Radar doesn't cover the whole of NZ, so I suspect neither of the above going by previous similar maps. The figures are more likely to be based on MS's own network of sites (incl. MS/Council sites), not all of which are shown in real-time on 'Your-weather', and possibly includes the NZ Transport Agency sites?

GFS starting to hint at a rather cold outbreak next Tuesday - Thursday. Something tells me we could be in for an interesting Winter.

Terrible Weather here in Canterbury today, with a lovely fine settled day
Anyone would think that a stationary anticyclone was over the region at about 1036hPa 8-o

Latest EC run also backing that up - nothing major but snow to around 500-600m at this stage...

Its been really nice to mix the sporadic rainfalls with good sunshine over the past week here in ChCh. The seasons have certainly turned, May still looking very mild overall though after the first 20 days!

re M/S
I see there is a severe weather warning out for severe northerly gales
for Auckland/Northland
the marine forecasts have not been updated with that in mind yet
I would think they should be updated earlier than the now currently relatively late 11am
? :)

There was actually a storm that got going for a good few hours offshore about 20km from the canterbury bight yesterday afternoon, the same cold SW flick that brought brief heavy isolated showers to the region and some instability.
So we are getting hints or dregs of storm chances while the rest of the country dances in storm glory >_< .
I know its not typically our storm season but a decent hailstorm with a couple of claps of thunder to start winter would be ideal.

I suspect that the end of July to late August could be the east coast of the south islands, chance of getting something interesting from deep cold blasts probably in the way of snow etc.
But then my crystal ball has been a little less under the weather so to speak the past few years :-k :-#

A polar jet stream over the country Tuesday. A very cold S-SW blast looks on the cards going by gfs

the northerly wind ahead of the front is not as bad as the models showed
will be a good blast to come through with the wind change though
later today it could get windier with the next low approaching though

Was gusting over 50 kt in the Gulf at around 6:30am. Still very blustery, but has eased a bit since then.

yeah, but not the severe gales the models were showing
instead just a more garden variety northerly ahead of a front..which has not given all that much rain either..i.e the front is weaker than the models showed too

The rain has just started here - forecast eased up yesterday arvo for today to only show mostly drizzle today from what had been 45mm in the previous run.
When I got up at 5am this morning it was 3.9°C, and 30mins later it was 7.9°C. And now it's dropped back down a bit since the rain's started. Wouldn't be surprised if that's as warm as we get it today....
