Re: General February Weather
The model outlook has high pressure as the dominant feature, not unusual for the time of year. Plenty of nice weather here, intense flash flood events still ongoing for parts of eastern Australia.

Re: General February Weather
Day of clagg to finish off summer, well apart from tomorrow which I hope is fine. Got the fire going second day in a row.
Must be one of the coldest summers here on record?
Looking forward to a hot winter?

Re: General February Weather
If I was to sum up this summer - wind, wind and a bit of - wind. First summer in our new house and we’ve hardly been able to enjoy our outdoor area for the strong easterly all day, every day (bar a select few)
I’m actually looking forward to winter

Re: General February Weather
Yes, the wheat harvest doesn't look all that good this year with all this clagg and unsunny conditions. Real La Nina weather for us down here.
Mostly warm and humid conditions up north leading to overcast skies down here with cloud from the southerly changes not really clearing despite anticyclonic conditions following. This resulting in rather cold daytime temperatures for the time of year. Today's maximum was only 14.2C whereas last year temperatures in the 30s were quite common, here.

Its been a very average summer overall in Christchurch. Plenty of easterly winds and less of the 30c days we are used to in summer. Look forward to autumn and some calmer weather.

Re: General February Weather
I had 3 hours between flights in Chch on the 16th , was amazed by the grass everywhere, bowling green like and it was the proper rye and frescue not summer grasses. Looked like mid spring, not the end of summer.JP. wrote:Its been a very average summer overall in Christchurch. Plenty of easterly winds and less of the 30c days we are used to in summer. Today's screen min was 1.5 C.Days max in high teens.Yesterday max 19.7C.Although rain evenly spread there has not been alot of it.Each front gives a couple of mm except for 18th when 24.4mm fell which improved grass moisture but was deteriorating again a week later. Some greening but no growth.

Re: General February Weather
And some of those record or near record Feb rainfalls from MetService sites...MeService February 2022 Summary – Extreme rainfall in between highs
February started off with a Red Severe Weather Warning for the West Coast. MetService reserves these Red Warnings for the most impactful weather events. Extreme rainfall, flooding and slips affected Westland and Buller, with between 500-1100mm of rain observed. A state of emergency was declared in the Buller District between 2-5 February. Taranaki also saw extreme flooding with the same weather system, with the Red Warning extended there.
Preceding high humidity and the approach of Tropical Cyclone Dovi towards New Zealand sparked another suite of heavy rain warnings for the West Coast, as well as for numerous other regions. Another state of emergency was declared in Buller on 9 February, with mandatory evacuations.
TC Dovi produced severe gales and heavy rainfall to many parts of the North Island on 12-13 February 2022, making landfall just north of Taranaki with a central pressure of 986hPa. Damaging winds were experienced across Northland and Auckland, as well as from Wellington to Taranaki.
It was the wettest February on record for Taupo (192mm), Napier (248mm), Masterton (346mm), Westport (610mm), Wanaka (105mm) and Christchurch (148mm); and second wettest for Taumarunui, Whanganui, Levin, Palmerston North, Wellington, Hokitika, Blenheim and Ashburton. For New Plymouth, Nelson and Blenheim, it was the third wettest February observed.
In the case of Napier (248mm) and Wellington (346mm), it was the third wettest month, at any time of year, in long rainfall records starting 1950 and 1927 respectively.
As expected during a La Nina summer, frequent northeast winds prevailed across Aotearoa. Summer hot day records were smashed for Whangarei, Auckland and Hamilton, with the latter two regions recording 60 days in excess of 25C. Record February warmth was experienced across many areas of the North Island, and it was also an unusually warm February along the West Coast South Island. In contrast, it was a cloudier and cooler February along the eastern South Island.

Re: General February Weather
3 consecutive months with Mangere having a mean monthly temperature of 21C or above, that is probably a first ?

Might be. Jan and Feb 2018 at Mangere were 21.0 or higher but Dec 2017 was under 21.

Yes, Mangere and Akld Aero both recorded their highest ever Dec T-means of 21.0C (would also be a record for March).

Re: General February Weather
I looked at the climate statistics pages for the Summer of 2017/18 (New Zealands hottest Summer on record) and no location had 3 consecutive months with a monthly mean temperature of 21C or over apart from Leigh 3 EWS Jan -March 2018.

Re: General February Weather
According to NIWA, this summer was Auckland and Tauranga Aero's warmest on record and Hamilton Aero's 2nd warmest; Christchurch Aero, however, was exactly normal (1981-2010 average). It was also Wellington's 3rd wettest and Christchurch's 4th wettest summer on record.

A feature of the Auckland Summer was very few rain days, a lot of watering of the garden.
