I think the tropical activity to the north of the country has been quieter than normal up to last week also the SAM has been negative, the westerlies have come north.

A few flies are being persistent and wonderfully adhesive today, often a sign of rain in the near future.
Canterbury Radar seems not to be showing at present, so am just observing cloud to my south and wondering what it holds :-w

A blue dome day here, after the clearance of morning cloud, but interesting clouds to the south to SW developing as the NW picked up this afternoon.

Like I said not long ago the high pressure systems at the moment are unusually weak 1010hpa-1020hpa, a typical high scenario for this time of the year is around 1020-1035hpa and that brings much more settled weather especially to the south island and allows tropical lows to slide onto the north island.
Its almost as if the lows to the south and monsoon/cyclones to the north are in control and could continue to do so right through, we may not see a calm period until late March who knows nose  :-w

Some snow on the high peaks around Queenstown this morning, it is a bit unusual for January especially late January. A very cold upper trough is over the region.

Looking like very little rain up north for the rest of the month. The models are changing so much at the moment though so it's hard to know for sure...

Chch Aero's T-max is running about 1.0C above its 1981-2010 normal, but its T-min is 1.6C below normal - so a T-mean of 0.3C below normal so far...

So pretty much normal then, and of course most folk will be saying its been good as the daytime temps are running higher. Not many of us notice the temp in the middle of the night :)

Certainly the T-max are below normal for here

Interesting how the Wellington radar is showing up this line all the way west of CHCH,what would be causing this??

It is all noticeable, the cooler nights also show up at the start of the day and in the evening but the 0.3C is very little difference from the average.

It's probably intereference from another transmitter. We will investigate it as it shouldn't be there.
