Re: General July Weather
Temperature went from -4C to 6C in less than 10 minutes when that southerly hit, I was doing some boxing for pavers on a house with numb fingers and could see the ice on the deck melt really fast.
It was so cold initially the showers couldn't make it to ground but the spits that did were light and almost flaky.

Can't believe some of the numbers being thrown up for next Wed and Thu in Christchurch, 18C max and 9 min, very impressive for this time of year!

Re: General July Weather
I can.
It has to do with positioning/movements of anticyclones and depressions as they move from west to east, with the odd 'rodent' thrown in between.
There can be cold movements in summer and warm movements in winter. It's the natural form and occurrence of the atmosphere.

Westerly from now through early spring tend to deliver the odd burst of heavy rains for this area ,so even though this week coming will be warmer i expect it to be wet at times.

NW conditions this week for the country so a nice change from the southerly fridge.
Looking like heavy falls/thunderstorms for the SI West Coast later in the week.

Re: General July Weather
5 frosts here so far this year, June was frost free. Feels like it has been a cold July.
The systems that bring the warm NW airflow onto NZ this time of year can also bring cold air flow, often a cold Southerly will be chasing the warm NW. Some cold air for NZ around the end of the week.

Re: General July Weather
temperature average is going to end up being above here for July
due to the warm start and the fact the last few days have been a bit above again

Re: General July Weather
Yes, quite a warm airmass but stable for us given the 500mb will be -14C. Still should produce good rain on Sunday though.spwill wrote:Increasing dewpoints this week, up to 15C over the north of the country by the weekend.

Re: General July Weather
I see it was high of 17C in the Mackenzie Country (Twizel) yesterday and a run of 5 or 6 days before that with temps out of single digits so starting to get a little spring like.
-5 to 10C temp rise is good going.

Seems like ages since we've had some thunder....

---Looks as though much of the grunty stuff is moving over the Buller region at the moment.
Sadly, not much of a light show to the west from here this evening as what I expected

"Mt Ruapehu customer relations manager Annah Dowsett says they are pretty excited by the forecast, despite slightly warmer temperatures overnight."
Not quite sure what it is they are getting excited about, looks to be all rain and wind to me. More then happy to be proven wrong though

Is the ski season over. It hasn't started yet in Canterbury still waiting for the club fields to open! Looks promising for some heavy snow Sat afternoon through Sunday.
