Re: General February Weather
Where are all these storms their forecasting ????? Still waiting . Plenty of convection but all capped over 5k. High pressure inversion has been over the north for 6 weeks now ,will see a change back to strong cooler w/sw later next week. Well its been a good summer for beach goers anyway.Chance of a storm this summer in Tauranga zero now.

Re: General February Weather
Hmm, am hearing occasional thunder at the mo. No rain yet. Might have just jinxed it by putting camera batteries on charge.

Re: General February Weather
Not much more thunder heard. But a local, with good views elevation near here said there was quite a good storm in progress. Right now there must be a heavy shower as I've lost my satellite based TV signal (and I'm not using your typical small dish).

Re: General February Weather
No sooner did I finish that, than a heavy fall started, I'd put it in the 20-30mm/hr rate presently. Good rumble of thunder just heard too.

Spoke to soon. The cap has broken !!!!!!! Went for a walk after seeing a small funnel at 7ish over Omokoroa ,after that a doz or so weak IC flashes and an hour of moderate/heavy rain.[Tauranga not the thunder less capital afterall]May be more tonight offshore as the land breeze meets the NE. Hopeful for tomorrow if the sea breeze doesnt get over the Kaimais. What are your thoughts tgsnoopy ?

Re: General February Weather
Might be worthwhile to drive to Rotorua tomorrow, Some quite unstable conditions out there tomorrow.
The residual moisture of that front will help stuff kick off , just hopefully any residual cloud cover clears in time for prime DTSH and possible Sea Breeze interaction.
Lapse rates looking good, mainly due to a nice amount of moisture in upper levels, making more latent heat.
Trop at 9.5 KM tomorrow so convection could get quite tall.
Just hopefully the BOP wont get too much cloud, but with the sounding I saw, it looks 50/50.
Will have to check tomorrow morning.

Re: General February Weather
That convergence late yesterday in the Bay of Plenty lacked cold upper air.
We get the cold upper air coming across the North Island today so any convergence in the BOP or over the inland ranges will produce thunder/small hail.
I notice some shower activity over Waikato coast this morn to. Can see it from here.
500mb chart for mid today

That'd be right. Matt is going over to work in Rotorua today and I'm staying here in Tauranga.Tornado Tim wrote:Might be worthwhile to drive to Rotorua tomorrow, Some quite unstable conditions out there tomorrow.

Re: General February Weather
yes, was some nice looking convection off the coast here this morning
so unstable today ...
a fair bit of high cloud around at the moment...will slow down the heating..which might work in favour of delaying sea breeze for us here...hummm

Re: General February Weather
Looks like Christchurch will record it's equal second coldest February average minimum since records began at the airport back in 1954 - no wonder the last few weeks have felt cold in the mornings!

Re: General February Weather
Yea, it looks the atmosphere is more unstable over other regions than the models have indicated....Vertigo wrote:Torrential rain and thunder reported in Te Kauwhata just now.
I would expect a revision to the T-storm outlook soon.

Re: General February Weather
Pic of the storm receeding from TK. Not especially great pic, sorry, taken by mum
And a tower going up over the Hauraki Gulf right now. Producing what looks like noctilucent cloud above it.

Re: General February Weather
Stuff Developing to my west and north west, Anvils are quite dark (Grey), must be to do with the moisture at upper levels.

Thunder lightning over Auckland, just to the east.
Had a cloud burst here at Greenlane.
