Australia's biggest three-state cyclone

EXPERTS today described Cyclone Ingrid as the single biggest tropical cyclone to affect three Australian states.

Now into its 13th day since the Bureau of Meteorology began tracking it off the coast of far north Queensland on March 3, Ingrid has maintained its destructive force much longer than normal.

"Cyclone Steve took a similar path in February/March 2000 but Ingrid is the biggest cyclone to affect three states," Linda Paterson, of the bureau's Cyclone Warning Centre in Perth, said today.

The usual duration of a cyclone was four to seven days, she said.

The category five Cyclone Ingrid crossed the Queensland coast on March 10 and lost intensity as it travelled over Cape York.

But it gained in strength across the Gulf of Carpentaria before battering the 4000-strong Northern Territory town of Nhulunbuy at the weekend.

The Tiwi Islands north of Darwin were hit with 235km/h winds on Sunday, while nearby Croker Island also suffered severe damage.

Cyclone Ingrid menaced the remote West Australian Aboriginal community of Kalumburu last night and levelled the Faraway Bay resort, 200km west of Wyndham.

Ingrid was today moving south toward WA's Pilbara region and rapidly weakening, with little likelihood of reintensifying, Ms Paterson said.
