After todays fine weather in Auckland I think tomorrow will be more unstable here with some showers and perhaps Isolated thunderstorms.

The rain system appears to be further south than originally thought, hence the warnings for Malborough. Cloudy and rather cold in central Chch, but no rain at all today. Thought it was the southeasterly mini-rainshadow effect of BP, but radar shots today have shown the peninsula largely devoid of rain too. Predictably it's been wetter in North Canterbury, but seems like South Canterbury about and north of Timaru has had somewhat a wet day as well.
Had quite a heavy shower pass over at about 12.30ish and then light rain on anf off for abit

Yes cold here today with that S-SE wind somewhat sorta dry but there was some rain here around 6pm.
I was on the Port Hills CHCH side at Castle Rock Absailing had cold wind certainly a winter wind and a few light showers around midday.
Took some pics of CHCH from the hills which are attached below.
I slyly look at Saturday,Monday and ask my myself :-k hmm TS maybe but then again perhaps not a SW change is forecast to come through on Saturday around midday with showers is there potential there same with Monday I guess you gotta be at least somewhat positive even though it doesn't feel like it may happen anyone?? :? .
Heard on One News that Marlborough has recieved over 100mm of rain so farr with threatning rivers to burst  :D hopefully not.
Cheers enjoy those TS over NI tomorow looks like cud b big hail 20+ in diamter in some areas not bad :P .

West Melton
Is that outside of Christchurch?

Clear skies/calm this morning in AK. Looks like we are in for another fine day but the upper air is likely to be more positively bouyant today as the upper air has cooled off a few degrees since yesterday. So we should see some good cloud buildups this afternoon. :)

Cb tops could be seen to the west from sunrise this morning, and backing up what NZstorm says, the possibility of bubbles this arvo is looking good.

Possible sea breeze convergence anyone?

Attached radar shows Cb out to westside, plus a lumpy up north.

Gunna keep an eye out for a F/C today....conditions seem to be similar to last week (22/03/05)

Answer here

http://www.thunderstorm.co.nz/hail_in_new_zealand.htm

8cm diameter according to legend.

Likely to be Isolated hail over northern NZ today because the upper is is quite cold.

James wrote:Severe weather warning for Hawke's Bay (now lifted) was a non-event - just 4mm of rain, no wind.
I drove to Napier on Tuesday - pleasant afternoon there, a little rain that night. Wed. was interesting - big Cu buildups to S, W and NW but fine in Napier with plenty of sunshine. There was a stiffish onshore NE wind, more than just a seabreeze. Lovely day with pleasant temps. and lots of great opportunities for a photographer, with very nice cauliflower effects. About 5PM the NE wind stopped, the clouds moved in at last and there were heavy thundery showers between 5.30 and 7.30. Skies clear again over the town by 8.30 but there was a great "sound and light" show still going on far to the SE, probably near Waimarama or offshore a bit from there. Sparkling clear day today, virtually cloudless sky.
Lovely sunny day

large Cu line coming in from the West now. Looks to be Starting to tower with thick heavy bases.

Cloud tops still look a bit whispy, but there's plenty more of the day to go yet!!

any thoughts fellow JAFA's?

Have just got back to Albany from Helensville and there are some serious looking dark clounds just northwest of Helensville. I was listening to Radio Sport and heard some spherics. Hopefully it stalls overhead tonight.

Overcast here today but no rain and 15C hmm definatly Autumn and Winter kicking in.
LIGHTNING IN PEGUASUS BAY last night at around 11pm I did note one single strike at about 9pm but then things went quiet as most of the lightning was out sorta near Wellington but surther south.
Then when I checked at around 11pm there had been 4-5 strikes of lightning in Pegusausus Bay and they were quite close in.
Very Amazing considering how cold it was and 4-5 strikes don't just show up for no reason.
Looking good up north for TS this evening.
Cheers

This cb actually down Port Waikato way as seen from central Auckland.
40km distant. Since taking photo there has been some good congestus development.

Just add that I think this low pressure system has dried out a bit hence the lack of convection over land today. We got to 23C but the dewpoints are down around 13C. Upper air is cold for time of year, 500mb temp around -20C.

Should get showers a bit of thunder overnight in Auckland.
