Agreed. I think the Mackenzie would have the stablest conditions I've yet experienced in NZ, but it's still unpredictable, as this "winter" (hahahaha...!) has demonstrated.
Oamaru is a nice place though, and on a fine day is magnificent.
It's a general comment, both Oamaru + Blenhiem are very sheltered and being coastal have very temperate climates, Boring.
Most of the times I've passed through Oamaru, I've really noticed the cool northeasterly blowing off the sea, while further north (eg Timaru) there's been a warm northwesterly.

Ashburton certainly seems to catch the Nw'ester when other eastern parts can be in the cooler NE.
Summary of Oamaru weather
Mean annual sunshine 1792hrs
Mean rainfall 537mm
Mean February daily max temp 19.8C
Blenhiem
2447hrs
642mm
23.5C

I would think of those places getting the most boringest climate. According to Jim Salinger today, here in Canterbury will be enjoying a Hawkes Bay climate in years to come
On the downside , with more westerlies, the west coast will get wetter and the east drier apart from significant wet weather events ie. the Manawatu floods of 2004 which he decribed as a winter event happening in summer.
Global warming is quite evident now so we have to accept it as part of our normal lives. Warmer winters and cooler summers although summers could be more erratic as far as temps go.
I'd say New Plymouth would have NZ's most interesting climate.. but not the best!
Some surface flooding in and around the Waitomo region where I was yesterday and Monday which closed some caves, looked like it was very wet here in Hamilton though...

For Christchurch members on this forum, there is another one of the Jim Salinger seminars at the old Municipal Chamber Building, tomorrow at 3:30pm. It might be late for this notice but I forgot to post it earlier sorry
Apparently it was yesterday (Tuesday) - I found this out through this morning's Press article on it.

I suppose it depends on which weather pattern is prevailing and what sort of weather you find interesting. I'd personally say Dunedin, which can get some spectacular cold squally changes and snow on the hills, though Chch and Banks Peninsula also can get such changes. Having somewhere where you can get really good views (eg a high hill) is important.
Is that because of Taumaranui's frequent fogs and poor sunshine record?
Yup. I know someone who used to live there. Many a winter's day would see her driving up to the lookout above town to enjoy some sunshine above the fog.

I could support that - lived in Dunedin for several years and also often visited. Can remember when starting university one March - admittedly one which featured frequent S/SW outbreaks over NZ - the number of sudden alternations from NW or calm to SW that month was astonishing - even after living in Invercargill (where the mild breaks between SW episodes often promised less, so the next episode took one less by surprise). ...Having said that, Dunedin's stats. in the last few years with rather low rainfall and comparatively high sunshine are much better than any from the days I lived there.

Yes Dunedin has an interesting climate but dose miss out on the action when the cold flows are West of SW which is quite common, you get the odd shower reaching the city but they usually weak thats why I thought Gore or South Otago.
Get one or two very good Summer Thunderstorms down there as well usually in December.
And far from being the worst in my opinion...in fact of towns in the "western" zones of NZ, N Plymouth is the sunniest by a clear margin
I have wondered why this is the case. Perhaps New Plymouth misses the cloud cover in a southwesterly, particulary during the spring/early summer when SW'esters prevail.
I think this place has died
No interesting weather coming up for a while yet, or ever ....???
See you next month ... or when ever...????
Nice been knowing you
