1914, wow..
northland got 4 or 5mm from a easterly showers overnight, on the top side of the high...but i dont think thats related to the eaterly flick front this time (sometimes we get an easterly surge from just such a front)
actualy looking at the sat image, those showers in northland probably were an easterly surge, i.e part of the cold front got brought around the top of the incoming high...

We've had a mostly overcast day, around 6/8 - 8/8, in the southern Mackenzie (possible the whole basin) and cool to mild temps, but the wind has stayed solidly W/NW all day too.tich wrote:Noon radar shows some rain in the Waitaki/Oamaru area; could be a warm front, though noon obs shows no precipitation at any stations in the South Island. (was fine in Chch; now cloudy with a layer of high cloud)
If it flicks around to the East I'd expect to see some precipitation from down the valley, but so far it isn't looking like that'll happen. Usually it only makes it as far west as Kurow.

Yes Ben that seems to sum up the wintry outbreaks so far this winter, pathetictich wrote:In conclusion the cold snap was pretty brief and insignificant, except in that it followed a very mild spell. Just a dusting of snow on some southern and eastern South Island hills, and a few hail showers. Seems like the front and cold change fizzled out as it reached the central North Island - Wellington region got some cold rain, but I don't think any snow fell on the Desert Road, and Tokoroa's 19C max isn't what you get in a cold southerly in August, even a weak one.

...but anyway this oncoming anticyclone may prove interesting especially as it has easterlies to the north of it and a strong westerly flow to the south of it ?
