... but tomorrow should see a continuation of drizzle/wet with this " 'high-pressure' low" claggical gloom that we have at the moment over Canterbury.
Looking further ahead, things at the moment look "wet" for the commercial rugby final at Lancaster Park on Saturday night.
I hope that both teams are used to playing in wet conditions, otherwize, it may be a draw?

Well, I don't know about "blast" yet.squid wrote:looks like you are in for a blast fromt this system enjoy it.
Here in the Windy Isles that means a battering from the south bringing cold polar air to whistle up our kilts at this time of year.
The outlook for Windy Welly is that we'll still get a bit of sun before the weekend, and may then have a bit of rain with the odd "breeze" (cough). But that's not unusual as we head into winter.

I think we need another 24-48 hours of observations before we know what's coming up for the weekend. If the system passes thru the strait or south of us, we'll just get a bit wet and have an excuse to park up and watch tele for the weekend while the weeds and the lawn grows and "Mum" gets a bit anti. (me hopes).

I was aware of the anecdotal evidence, but it's helpful to have a figure put on it, thanks.RWood wrote:Even as a resident you may not be aware that windspeeds (from max. daily gust readings) have dropped 10-15% over the last 30 years.
I'm old enough to recall talk of ropes strung across a couple of intersections at times. And its years since I've been blown backwards into Featherston St while waiting at the Whitmore Street lights on the way to/from work.

It occasionally gets close, but not as spectacular as it used to.
I think the calmer conditions are better.

SEVERE WEATHER WATCH FOR WESTLAND
ISSUED BY METSERVICE AT 1145hrs 24-May-2006
VERY HEAVY RAIN LOOKING INCREASINGLY LIKELY FOR WESTLAND
A low is forecast to approach the South Island late Thursday, with
another deeper low expected to follow on its heals during Saturday.
An associated front is likely to become slow moving over the West
Coast between these lows, with strong moist northerlies expected to
bring an extended period of very heavy rain to Westland.
This situation has the potential to generate some extremely high
rainfall totals even for Westland. From late Thursday afternoon
through to Saturday morning, over 100mm could fall in some coastal
areas, with totals about the ranges possibly exceeding 300mm.
MetService forecasters will continue to monitor the situation to
determine if this watch requires upgrading to a warning and advises
people in the Westland area to stay up to date with the latest
forecast. Also, trampers planning on heading into the Westland
ranges or Southern Alps in the near future may want to reconsider
their plans.

Mid-tropospheric winds have just been shafted from N to NW, just like that! Relatively heavy shower here due to the change.. hopefully that's riddance to that massive 1039mb blocking high.
Should see tonight hopefully some widespread rain over the upper North.. but it all seems obscured at the moment.
Humid tomorrow, Ak up to 21c under partly cloudy skies

Just went through some of the most intense downpours I have ever been in on the way home.
The streets were literally flowing like rivers had to really slow down.
Id say it was a convective heavy shower although I can't see the towering clouds because its too overcast.
Cheers
Jason.

Yea was a nice heavy shower around 4pm/ 4:30, rain hit as light S came thru. There was one lightning strike by th look of it on Bp, probably around lunchtime. (going from what the met lighting viewer shows)03Stormchaser wrote:Not much rain for CHCh, Banks Peninsular should get a few heavier showers as foggy says. Also small risk of a thunderstorm, around lunchtime/early afternoon (probably not for chch though). Thursday not looking like much rain either till later at night and then falling thru out friday.

Fascinating...not much of anything elsewhere on that pic. I have some mates who always cop nothing but rain wherever they go. Possibly they're up your way tonight! Maybe Meridian should pay them to live down here near the lakes.Jasestrm wrote:Can clearly see the downpour moving north on the 6pm radar below.
