If I remember right that temp of 38.7 was only a few years ago, and I was in Alex at the time, there were a few days in row with temps in the mid 30’s

Do you know where the weather station is located in Alex RWood?

Reefton can be another hot spot.
It had 5 consecutive days of 30Cplus temperatures last summer or was it the summer before?

Yes, but with DP's around 15°C and a Humidex of about 31°C, that would make it 'feel' just as hot, if not hotter, here than in parts of Dunedin. Prefer the lower 20's here.

It was in Feb 2005. Not sure where the station is, it has moved at least twice since the early 1980s. Somewhere in the main flat part of town though, I'm pretty sure. If you go onto CliFlo the station data gives accurate lat./long. so it could be worked out.

I remember the summers of 1978 & 1979 in Twizel, mum was furious with us kids for playing in the tar that was creeping down the road.

BTW someone has turned the heater back up, was 25 with that easterly, not back up to 29!

I see that Culverden got to 35C and Hanmer Springs not far behind on 34C.
Good to see McAndrews Bay 34C not far behind, beating Alex at 33C \:D/

That 34 was really early on, some time around 10:30am, not long after that the NE kicked in and things calmed down to about 25-28 all day. Still no clouds low DP, it felt scorching all day, still does.

Anything for Oxford, that place is a heat bowl up in the foothills of North Canterbury?

Light northerly and a warm 31 here in Ashburton today, just back from New Brighton (ChCh) where it was a lot cooler with the NE seabreeze.Enjoying the dry heat compared to the stifling heat and humidity of Cairns.Dewpoint only 9 here, better than the 25 dewpoints we are used to.
Great to be back home......if only for 12 days.

Looking at some of the local weather stations i notice Fairfield max hit 34deg today.
My station has been around the 27deg which incidently is not the station that hit the very high
temperature yesterday am (there are two in Macandrew bay). Went out for a fish down at Cape Saunders but just too hot with the radiation from the black bassalt rock.

Yes, MetService had Ashburton on 33°C at 1pm and Blenheim Aero, Timaru Aero and Masterton were all on 30°C. A bit cooler at Invercargill Aero today though with just 21°C.

Interesting! Prior to all those new records being set on Feb 7, 1973, the highest ever official national temp recorded was 38.4°C at Ashburton on Jan 19, 1956.

Apparently, Darfield topped today's highest offcial temp with 35°C, followed by Culverden on 34°C and Ashburton, Blenheim and Molesworth all on 33°C.

A mere 27.3°C here at 2:50pm. ;)
