For all things relating to tectonic plate collisions. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis... the Pacific ring of fire and world-wide. Please create new threads for stronger earthquakes when they happen above magnitude 5.0.

Don't know about the Mayans but on Tuesday morning Marcus Lush said on Radio Live that he felt there would be a quake in the next couple of days =D>

Haven't felt any of the quakes here ...

Still quite a few small earthquakes going on all morning down south from what i have heard, latest one Geonet picks up as 5.3 magnatude at 12:25pm.
Its good they are happening in small aftershocks releasing the tension abit.
Edit. There have been another 4 earthquakes down south since half 12, the last one was around 2:30pm at 5.1 on the scale.
A 5.6 was felt around 1pm which is the strongest of the aftershock swarms today.
Its quite interesting how the aftershocks are relativly strong still, normally they are about 3-4 on the scale but perhaps because of the 7.8 quake its given the plates abit of a kick up.

The far south has been rattling away again today with 4 quakes since 7am.
A magnatude 5.1 at 7am and the others throughout the day all measure 5.0 according to Geonet.
Ok yes there is earthquakes for several months after a big one, but it seems unusual to have so many continuing at atleast 5 on the scale.
Perhaps another big one isnt far off.

No, I changed the original topic to 'Major Earthquake in Dusky Sound' as that's what the main July 15 Quake is commonly referred to as amongst seismic-circles. Most significant events are named by their place of occurrence, e.g. the Te Anau Event (the name 'Secretary Island' had already been used previously).

I moved your post from the 'Central NI earthquakes' thread, as it directly relates to the ongoing aftershocks of the Dusky Sound Event.

Yeah, the USGS registered it at 6.1 nowhere near what the 7.8 felt like but it was fairly noticable.

Wow, the plates sure are moving at the moment. Lots of reasonable evidence of the movement all around the place. A number of quakes right along the tectonic plate boundaries in the last 24 hours. Lets hope none of them get too large.

I'll agree that it was nowherenear what the 7.8 felt like, but for me it was almost unnoticable. It was only when a friend pointed out that there was an earthquake, that I noticed the one single object in our house that was moving. I could then feel the movement in my head, but nothing else. Hopefully the radar stood up to it out at work.

Yes the aftershocks can carry on for several months but not of such high magnatude, generally its between 4-5.2 the aftershocks but these are up and down big ones and small ones.
Suggests to me the Australian and Pacific plate are moving considerably, anytime soon for the big one perhaps.
Geoligists have been researching the beaches around Auckland which have been warned by people with dogs and young children after a number of animal deaths, they are concerned it could be some form of Sulphur in the water.
Fish have also been found washed up dead along with other marine life apparently.
Thats what somebody on TM forum said anyway.

I'm not sure that the size of these aftershocks is that unusual. If anything, they're probably a little on the low side, given the size of the main-quake. In fact, I'm a little surprised there haven't been more shocks above Mag 6.0 yet.

The 2003, Mag 7.2, 'Fiordland Quake' (west of Te Anau) produced more aftershocks of a higher magnitude during the first few weeks that followed than this one. Also, the Mag 6.7, 'George Sound Quake' in 2007 had a few aftershocks in the high Mag 5's and the Mag 6.8, 'Secretary Island Quake' in 1993 produced quite a few aftershocks above Mag 5.0.
