Where is the lococation of the above photo, excuse the unintended pun?
I don't think the recabbed "Hog" behind 6133 would be running as the 2 loco types weren't set up to run together ?

I must admit that I love trains too, especially steam, nothing in the transportation world is more majestic than the grand old girls of the past - sends chills up my spine to smell, watch and listen to a coal burner working its guts out under full load while blowing its whistle.... (shame most are burning oil these days)

Oh god I wished I still had my dslr

Bit of overkill earlier.. 3 x DXB's + 1 x DXR pulling 20 wagons.. I can imagine it was a motive power movement but to have all 4 locomotives powered on such a piddly little consist? KiwiRail must have money to burn.. just the lead loco would have had enough horses to do the job.

The 3 DXB's were also freshly painted so much so you could smell it as they went past me.

I onced was presented with 5 locos powered up to drive the 'Coastal Pacific' in 1996. I refused to take the consist (the locos were needed in Picton) as it hindered my control of the train handing of train number 445.
I only took the leading loco and got away with it.

I dont know what happened with above posting, why it's all joined together?

I just found it a waste of diesel.. the big stickers in the cab of our aussie locos read "fuel saved today is tomorrows motive power".. funny that.
Funnier again cause I agree with you 100% John.. 4 powered motives are a lot harder to handle than 1 with 3 deadheads.. the only thing more dangerous than a full consist is an overpowered one or light engine running.

yes. One loco would of powered the consist, but I wouldn't know what the situ was, in your case?
I go to work around 7:30am each morning and I usually pass a train heading south around the Weedons. Nice to see only one loco, heading south, usually a DFT, hauling a rake of wagons which would be 1000 tonnes plus. 8)

Dunno mate, Ive seen a single DC haul a bigger load than all 4 of above put together, but then again they could have been re-engined and being run-in without the classifications.. like i said the paint was still fresh.

Cant wait to see the DL's up here very shortly.. word has it they are going to be working the Glenbrook steely (mission bush line) so I will get some good opportunitys to see those beasts very soon.

The Dls will be needed in the milk season on the the southern 1/2 of the NI plus Auckland ARTA max whatever require 6 DFTs and rumors some DCs could be written off.

They are transferring some DFT's to the Auckland urban pax services.. 3 so far are being outfitted to haul longer trains.

Stumbled across this last night.. now THIS is how you haul an underpowered consist with a POS loco overheating & shutting down on you.. knighthood deserved for the driver! Turn the volume up & just listen to those EMD's feathering away.. music to my ears.

Old vid but when you think about it.. the S class, 1800hp, the B.. 1500, both T classes only 900 +1 shut down so that roughly 2 normal locos doing the work.. but yeah, 1/57 isnt that hard.. good ol porcupine hill :)

I hope someone here proves me wrong.. but around 2am this morning during my garbage sleep.. did I hear the first of our new DL class doing a power test out of Pukekohe?

Certainly did *not* sound like the usual ones that patrol the NIMT.. nothing seen this afternoon outbound to Hamilton.
Ghost ship.
