Re: General February Weather
We need rain in the Oamaru area. Farmers are concerned in places. I see forecast for Sunday's front is now down to a few showers only.

Shaping up to be a beaut day which is just as well, farmer & I have both been out on the slashers for a while now, although a bit on the humid side the sun is welcome after days of rain to get the grass etc under control. Amazing what a bit of rain does (upside is fresh mushrooms for dinner)

Re: General February Weather
The saturday just gone. I got a quickfire 27mm out of it but just up the road where all the flooding occoured (Valley Rd area) the farmer who owns this place got 90mm in that deluge.
Yeah I just finished reading the paper actually Brian & saw the photos, the 2 eldest boys live across the road from the duckpond there (week on week off) and they said it was super cool!
The NI trunk line going completely underwater was just amazing!

Thanks for that. Any pics or links to the story would be great as well.Dale Small wrote:The saturday just gone. I got a quickfire 27mm out of it but just up the road where all the flooding occoured (Valley Rd area) the farmer who owns this place got 90mm in that deluge.

Weather Watcher & co..I think you will have to type in "franklin" and it should come up with the county news, there is a small story on the cover page but if you click into the photo gallery, all images and captions are there.

Re: General February Weather
I notice Wanaka Aero has surpassed 30C again today and according to this article from the Otago Daily Times Website they have done so every day this week: http://www.odt.co.nz/the-regions/centra ... 30deg-days (I presume they mean every day since Monday, although I think I saw some temps in the 30Cs down there over last weekend too?)
Is it unusual for this region to get such a prolonged period of heat or is it quite common during late summer? I would have thought 3-4 days would be the longest you'd expect given how changeable the weather down that way normally is?
Interestingly they mentioned this in the above article:

Surely that region gets weather all year round, or is it just something a bit out of the ordinary that spurns peoples interest in the weather.Weather stations had also been surprisingly popular.
"We've sold quite a few of those this week, the more elaborate ones with rain and wind gauges attached.

Re: General February Weather
Hi Tim S, Yes 31-33C every day since Monday including today and tomorrow by the looks. Prior to that, last Friday's 29C was its highest so far this summer (Jan & Feb norm is just below 24C).Tim S wrote:I notice Wanaka Aero has surpassed 30C again today and according to this article from the Otago Daily Times Website they have done so every day this week: http://www.odt.co.nz/the-regions/centra ... 30deg-days (I presume they mean every day since Monday, although I think I saw some temps in the 30Cs down there over last weekend too?)

Wanaka's current heat-wave is fairly unusual, but not uncommon. Most recently, at the beginning of Feb, 2005, Wanaka Aero also had 6 consecutive days with temps above 30C, including its record 34.5C since records began in 1973. Also, at the end of Jan, 2006, it had 4 consecutive days with temps around 34C, and in Jan, 1999 it had 5 consecutive days with temps of 31-34C.

Got 32c at 4.30 pm with a light E wind today, which is getting close to what is the norm this time of year here, tomorrow should be higher when the warmer NE gets here.
I recorded in 2007 16 days in a row over 30c

Re: General February Weather
The ave feb max for Wanaka is 23.8C, plenty of nice weather there at this time of year with the slow moving Highs, but Autumn moves in quickly after february.

Re: General February Weather
Cheers for that Nev, thought it would be fairly unusual to get so many 30C+ days in a row. Interesting those figures from Jan 99, Feb 05 and Jan 06 though, as they were all months were the SOI was in positive territory (ie. La Nina), whereas the SOI at the moment is around -13.
I know its probably rather insignificant as the SOI wouldn't have that great of an influence to the climate of the South Island of NZ but I would have thought La Nina periods would mean extended periods of warm temps would be more common than during a El Nino period such as we are having atm. Maybe if it were an La Nina period they would have got even higher temps and for longer.

El nino is having a break at the moment, which is good...nice to get rid of the persistant SW winds for a while
with a la nina like high over the south island
the sea temperature around the SI has warmed up alot recently, and in the tasman off the west coast of the SI

its not far at all, though you get all seasons depending where you are and what the weather is on a given day over that hours trip. You will find the westerlies are quite good there but on the otherhand the southerlies are rawer/wetter and less Sc in anticyclones.

Re: General February Weather
Heavily overcast with morning low cloud at the moment. Already 21 degrees though despite the morning low cloud. Dew point at 14 degrees. Overnight low was 17 here so not cold at all. Must be more a NNE than ENE. If wind stays light and nice sunshine later could get into high 20's.
