Been very busy checking lines and isolating power for safety.
Tornado was reported north of Waimauku and near Kaukapakapa and Makerau Valley. Could have been the same one as the Wellsford tornado. roofing iron in the trees, sheds demolished and many trees destroyed. As well as power lines down on the deck.

I think those pics Steve could be wind damage rather than tornado.
Avondale looked like F1 damage but very localised. A lot of vegetative debris there and a house did lose a good section of the roof.
Instability was weak but dynamic forcing was strong and good low level wind shear. The NZWP sounding taken just after the frontal passage had 60knots of wind at 950mb (400m).

Yes, I tend to agree. I've seen quite a few Macrocarpa succumb to strong straight-line winds here. Same with Gumtree limbs, which in those news and sports photographer's photos look to be about 1 km apart.NZstorm wrote:I think those pics Steve could be wind damage rather than tornado.

There are little pockets of wind damage around Auckland, saw quite a bit of tree damage around Goldie St, St Heliers yesterday ( eastern suburbs)

Yeah I would tend to agree. Description from an eye witness said at the time the rain was so intense the visibility was so bad they couldn't make out a tornado. Microburst possible, but more than likely straight-line wind damage.

Interesting (albeit a little dodgy) weekend report from Mt Maunganui…

There was roofing iron in 15 meter tall trees, forgot to take photo as I had to pull fuses for safety.

Agreed, The M word also thrown in for good measure in the article. The stupid thing is, the article refers to a quite sensible set of quotes from a Metservice Meteorologist which discredits the Tornado aspect, yet they still chose to run with the story as their front page.Nev wrote:Interesting (albeit a little dodgy) weekend report from Mt Maunganui…

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story! Fairly typical of the media these days, no wonder I'm so cynical of them.
