Re: General January Weather
It has seemed to me that the seasons this year are two to three weeks behind what I'm used to, basing that on flowering dates of garden plants.
Have been pleased to see the rain, to be honest.
The "good" days will come, probably

There is a hint the westerlies will be retreating after the 20th.jamie wrote: so sick of this bullsh1t 'summer' weather. No real end in sight either! Glad to be going to Tutukaka next Monday for two weeks. Whangarei is one place that does quite well on this weather pattern
Eastern Northland has had the best of the weather lately, I see kerikeri only 8.6mm past month. The dying front on Friday should give northern NZ some showers, humid ahead of the front.

Re: General January Weather
Here's hoping. We're not taking our family holidays until the 19th and I am hoping that this god-awful westerly onslaught will have given way to a more settled pattern by then. So far this has to rate amongst the worst summers ever for western parts of NZ, or at least it certainly feels that way!spwill wrote:There is a hint the westerlies will be retreating after the 20th.jamie wrote: so sick of this bullsh1t 'summer' weather. Re: General January Weather
Should be hot here too then back to the usual summer weather so far this year, with the roaring forties, kicking up these lows..
Like years gone past, there hasn't been much of a summer around this time but February to March have shined with the fact of summery weather.

12 Jan 2016 9th Jan 2017 Same spot. Same brand and variety of seed. Planted similar time, October.
Yes can get genetic variation but don't have a sunflower yet on about 25 plants, a few just trying to open now. Last year, same week had several over 2m tall with flower full sized and open.

Re: General January Weather
averaging over 2.5 c colder than the last 15 years or so here
Niwa said Jan/Feb will be average to above average
with a general SW flow to continue for a while longer (but will be a bit more westerly)
February is going to have to be like 2C warmer than normal!

The star of the 2014-15 summer was a warm, dry and very sunny January.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:Should be hot here too then back to the usual summer weather so far this year, with the roaring forties, kicking up these lows..

Locally the long-term records show there is almost no difference between the 2 months apart from a small February temperature advantage.

Long range on the GFS the pattern does improve. But the next 10-12 days look disturbed WSW.
Chart for 25th January. Big upper ridge over NZ.

Re: General January Weather
I'm hanging out for some warmer weather as it's rather depressing that I've lit the fire the last 2 days.
Wasn't really required, as in if it were winter I wouldn't have bothered, but it's supposed to be summer, so I need it to be warm(ish)!

Re: General January Weather
I dont think the weather has to much effect on sunflowers, the Giant Russian variety that i grow for seed is the same as most yearscbm wrote:

I planted a Mexican Alder tree recently and it has grown 1m in the past month. So the growing season has been good provided plants are watered.Manukau heads obs wrote:we have grown a giant sun flower OK in our garden (it has flowered OK etc), despite the cold summer so far

Re: General January Weather
Hasn't been a great plum harvest here. I suspect this may be due some premature blossoming last year, as even though Dec was exceptionally dry, our spring rainfall was about normal…

Growing season here is terrible. New leaves are being burnt. I fact every single tree around here looks sick on the W side.
