Came onto rain with a bit of a southerly in the morning then cleared up.
Much the same here, it was absolutely pathetic really, not even enough rain to form a puddle, but oh well, my thunder drought continues on. >_<

Few rumbles of thunder as it passed over Wellington CBD. Short burst of hail too. Heavier in other parts of town by the looks of posts on social media.

Great pic from the Hutt looking south to the heads of the Harbour:

Was "rain before 7, fine by 11" here today; now some bits of hail falling.
12.5°C - feels colder - and a dark cloud visible to the north-east.

The southerly front that hit Wellington was amazing and much like the southerly front that hit on the 14th of October 2014. I have a great timelapse of it forming and rolling in that I'll post later. As it got closer it was whipping up sea spray and a couple of whirlwinds one of which was very large. Then when it went overhead there was a blast of wind and the temperature dropped very quickly and then it was heavy rain with some small hail. Not long after I went to somewhere on Wellingtons south coast and recorded wind gusts over 100 kph!

I had a great time from Picton to Chch on the road this afternoon. It was super wild north of Ohau Point, so rugged I stopped driving for safety's sake at one point

Very impressive. Not very pleasant driving south in the Hutt valley at the time.

GFS dialling up the cold for Saturday’s front, then suggesting something very cold on Thursday. EC slightly warmer. Neither outlook is especially warm though.

GFS definitely showing some quite extreme cold for this of year next week. EC slightly warmer as you say, though the EC EPS run extending cold into the NZ area for the next 14 days, after a brief warm up to start next week.

Certainly getting a cold cloudy start to October in Auckland.

sure is colder than normal
its more like a El Nino spring pattern, all these cold SW winds.
I guess we can blame the stormy southern ocean (positive SAM) and maybe the polar jet stream being a bit out of place due to the SSW (i.e sudden swings north at times)
warmer NE wind coming next week

Nice spring sunny day here with temperature sneaking into the twenties.
Sadly the southerly change is coming through in the morning as it could of been more volatile if through in the afternoon. :(
That's the SSW for you, not very interesting in this neck of the woods.
Thrown the popcorn onto the garage roof for the birds to eat. Don't worry it's organic ;)

Despite the thunder risks for earlier in the week for up here, it was abit of a no show q- .
I was in the Abel Tasman and it was just a few showers with weak instability.
The SSW and the current patterns are keeping Nelsons temperatures down too, we havnt cracked 20C yet just an average daily temperature of 15C.
Overnight lows between 4C and 7C, snow remains on the ranges and towards rainbow ski feild.

Hmm... 15C and 6C are Nelson Aero's normal T-maxs and T-mins for Sep (17C & 8C for Oct), and on average it only records a 20.0C+ temp every other year during Sep. In 2009 it didn't record a 20.0C+ temp until Nov 2nd.

Starting to look like some blocking patterns in the coming 2 weeks at last'!!! Highs well south and cut off lows occupying the Tasman. Temps looking warmer in the north and continuing cooler in the south. Glad to see the back of these westerly winds for a while
