Re: US Weather 2021
Moderate risk issued for Oklahoma tomorrow. A potent autumn (fall) setup with all hazards possible. Discrete supercells expected to fire off the dry line and intersecting cold front.

Apparently doesn't look that great on the HRRR. Be interesting to see what develops. Tim (Marshall) will be back just in time to chase.darcyplumb wrote: Sun 10/10/2021 20:57 Moderate risk issued for Oklahoma tomorrow. A potent autumn (fall) setup with all hazards possible. To my eyes (and I’m just a rookie) the atmosphere is looking very potent on this mornings data. About 4-5 hours out now from the beginning of the event. Watch this space.tgsnoopy wrote: Sun 10/10/2021 21:56Apparently doesn't look that great on the HRRR. Be interesting to see what develops. Re: US Weather 2021
Tim posted to facebook: "Current HRRR helicity track is eerily similar to the May 3, 1999 tornado track." So either it's improved or the earlier reports I read weren't true. The date Tim referenced was an earlier F5 tornado day through Moore OK.darcyplumb wrote: Mon 11/10/2021 06:55To my eyes (and I’m just a rookie) the atmosphere is looking very potent on this mornings data. I'm going to be having trouble working later today.

So glad I’m not working today! My oldest child is at preschool and it’s just the baby and I at home! I may even run multiple devices today! I’ve done a lot of reading about the Moore F5 1999 tornado. Chasers will have to be on their toes today with storm motions potentially reaching 60-70 miles per hour!tgsnoopy wrote: Mon 11/10/2021 07:37Tim posted to facebook: "Current HRRR helicity track is eerily similar to the May 3, 1999 tornado track." Re: US Weather 2021
Wow, it's simply not safe to be anywhere near the mesocyclone when they are moving that fast. Especially in an Urban area. We had trouble staying safe from the May 20th 2013 Moore EF5, it was reasonably slow moving, I really hope everyone stays safe and there are no big ones through built up areas.darcyplumb wrote: Mon 11/10/2021 07:54So glad I’m not working today! Re: US Weather 2021
Very quickly turning into a QLCS type event. Lots of embedded areas of circulation in a rapidly developing squall line.

Re: US Weather 2021
Two cyclic long track supercells have finally weakened below severe limits in Oklahoma after a good 4-5 hours of havoc. Multiple tornadoes including a couple of multi vortex tornadoes.

Re: US Weather 2021
Absolute insanity happening in the USA over the past few hours. A big time tornado outbreak covering multiple states has caused many casualties and fatalities. One particular long track tornado with a 3 mile wide debris ball has been on the ground over 3 hours now, covering 4 states. Definitely a historic outbreak not only for December but for any time of the year.

Early indications from this tornado outbreak are not good.

Absolutely incredible scenes. I heard on a news report one tornado had an “on ground” distance of over 220 miles. That’s incredible!

Re: US Weather 2021
I have no doubt that the now dubbed ‘Quad States’ tornado will be the longest track tornado in history. Current record is 219 miles from back in 1925. It was jaw dropping watching it on radar yesterday afternoon. I spotted in south of Little Rock Arkansas and it stayed discreet all the way into Kentucky.

Re: US Weather 2021
A real tragedy judging by the news on the television this evening.
Thunderstorms may be OK but tornadoes can be a different thing.
Is it usual for such storms to occur this time of year over there?

Re: US Weather 2021
Sobering thoughts. It's been 8+ years since the last EF5 rated tornado (Moore OK, May 20th 2013). I think they've just had one that will qualify.
I agree that the scales aren't effective & need updating (seems quite quiet on that front, not sure what's happening).
In any case, I wasn't in a position to armchair chase yesterday as such, but take a look at this one:
I may edit & add others as I see them.

Re: US Weather 2021
The fact that it happened at night made it far worse than if it occurred during the day. People had no warning and couldn't see the tornado(es) coming.

Re: US Weather 2021
USA has excellent warning systems for tornadoes but no doubt some people would have missed or ignored the warnings. They were fast moving tornadoes which would have made them more dangerous and being at night would have added to the danger.tich wrote: Mon 13/12/2021 17:40 The fact that it happened at night made it far worse than if it occurred during the day. Re: US Weather 2021
The majority of the population would be at home or asleep or whatever. Not expecting anything like this due to the time of year, autumn or fall going into winter. Definitely a sign of climate change.
