The crisp outlines of the boiling clouds were a remarkable feature of today's convection.

Re: General January Weather
Got to 29deg here with a moderately heavy shower which then bought the temp down to 22deg.
The models have done a major term over the last few days, 190mm over the next week from Thursday now 11mm for the same period. That is a sign from the past that its about to get bone dry.

Re: General January Weather
Another decent cell developing inland of Timaru. I was hoping for a bit more action here today. Looks like some decent rain for Chch and the Plains tonight regardless.

Re: General January Weather
Weird forecast from metservice for here tomorrow. “Hotter than usual”
Yet the forecast high is 25 which is pretty much bang on average for January

Re: General January Weather
Was a grandstand view up the Port Hills this afternoon, remarkably we didn't see a drop of rain, just super hot with non stop thunder and lightning. Incredibly explosive. Friends in Lincoln had torrential rain under this cell

Back into Auckland this afternoon, 51mm accumulated here over recent days
Dew point will be around 20C tomorrow with light winds but nothing unusual. Sunday has potential for a very warm day as there will be plenty of heating.David wrote: Fri 06/01/2023 20:10 Weird forecast from metservice for here tomorrow. “Hotter than usual”Yet the forecast high is 25 which is pretty much bang on average for January

Re: General January Weather
Back home after spending Christmas and New Year up in the Wellington region.
Got a thunderous welcome on our return but sadly had other things to do rather than concentrate on the weather.
Lots of continuous thunder to the north of here and around Mt. Peel and the 4 Peaks area.
Only saw one lightning flash on a backburmer thunderstorm after the one that MS had a severe TS warning for.
Much cooler this evening with a southerly and 10.2mm of rain recorded from the rain moving from west to east.
27.4C the maximum for today and quite humid with humidity up to 90%.
Some photos from today.

Re: General January Weather
25C might be the January average over the last 10 years or so, but the 1981-2010 January average for most of MS and NIWA's more central Auckland sites ranges between about 23.3C and 23.6C (except for Ardmore, which is 24.4C).David wrote: Fri 06/01/2023 20:10 Weird forecast from metservice for here tomorrow. “Hotter than usual”Yet the forecast high is 25 which is pretty much bang on average for January
But yes, I'd hardly describe 25C as 'hot' and the word 'usual' could be open to interpretation?

Re: General January Weather
Suits a certain narrative that's being heavy pushed, metservice is government funded as well.

Re: General January Weather
25C is well within the normal maximum temperature range for Auckland in January. Auckland airport has reached 25C or higher on 10 days of the last 20.
Get ready for the silly heat warnings that will be coming our way.

Tomorrow might be a day to watch here for thunder risk with the heating and convergence.

Re: General January Weather
Had a very interesting drive home from Blenheim yesterday afternoon. Admittedly only using my car external temp as a gauge. I left Blenheim at 1:30pm in overcast skies and 24c. Uneventful weather until just south of Kaikoura when I passed through some very heavy showers and 23c.
Waipara took the crown and max temp of 34c and beautiful sunshine. I put my arm out the window and was amazed at the warmth in the air. I stopped in Amberley 33c and grabbed a bite to eat outside. As I ate the dark clouds formed over head so I scoffed down my early dinner and ran to the car. Less than 15km later in Waikuku the temp was down to 20c.
Arrived home in ChCh to a mild 25c but sadly looked to have missed all the decent activity the southern parts of the city saw.

Re: General January Weather
Reached 23C, dew point 21C here, showers , clearing skies later. A small amount of thunder heard late afternoon here.
A better chance for thunder for Auckland tomorrow afternoon.

Flying to Chch yesterday afternoon we had to go well out to sea to avoid some of those thunderstorms, but in the process also got some nice views of them.

Re: General January Weather
You must of been later than us as flying to the Richard Pearce Airport near Timaru as we flew mostly through clagg when it cleared, it didn't look as though the higher atmosphere was unstable even though we flew further out along the coast. Encountered no turbulence.harleyb wrote: Sat 07/01/2023 22:25 Flying to Chch yesterday afternoon we had to go well out to sea to avoid some of those thunderstorms, but in the process also got some nice views of them.![]()

Overcast and wet day here with a total of 38.3mm of rain falling with colder southerly winds and only getting up to maximum daytime temperature of 12.8C after a warm muggy day yesterday. Overcast and claggy for the rest of the day with low cloud and grey skies.

Re: General January Weather
A generally fine blue dome day with NE winds.
24.7C the maximum for today.
Possibly the last day for sunny blue skies as clagg will roll in for the rest of the week as a result of exTC Hale moving across the North Island.
I see the West coast has been basking in fine warm weather with temperature in the high twenty's, possibly 30C in places like Reefton and Greymouth.
Looks like that is the place to go these holidays instead of places like the Coromandel or the Northland area.
Feel sorry for you Aucklanders but it will probably fine up in February which is usually the hottest time of the year, when everybody is back at work.
