Location is given as Bream Bay which I think is on the east coast of 'Northland'.

A short clip here of the funnel cloud near Waipu. https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zeal ... okers.html

500mb temperatures were around-26C over Northland/Auckland yesterday. Auckland was largely sheltered. Bay of Plenty/Coromandel had thunderstorms yesterday as well with the onshore flow and convergence.

Yes, Mt Hutt picked up 19cm.
I see Metservice Methven recorded 43.3mm.
Cold and frosty in the South Island valleys this week but mild at higher elevations, not sure how much snow making can happen at Mt Hutt this week.

The rain really hugged the foothills on Sunday. We only got 4mm in Ashburton.

Might keep the frost at bay tonight John. Clear sky here as it got dark, so will it be as cold as last night? Heard from a truck driver today who said he drove through a pocket of -8 just a few k's from here

Yes, Wanaka also only had a max of 2.7C and Te Anau just 3.7C, due to a 'deck of low cloud' trapped by a warm inversion layer above.

Yes, there will be cloud cover or fog there. During the colder months low cloud likes to form in the inland valleys during periods of settled weather and with the low angle of the sun and short days this time of year the low cloud layer sometimes doesn't burn off during the day. The Wanaka area is classic for this.

I see Auckland airport is currently on 3.8C, coldest temperature of the year there.
The 500mb temperatures of -23/-24C over the upper North Island Friday-Mon is something to watch for a possible heavy shower/isolated thunder. See how it looks on the day, each day.

For a frost here we need a colder airmass, the clear skies and light winds are not enough.

Dew point temperatures with the incoming low system are around 11C-13C, not particularly moist even for June but it is cold aloft, 500mb temperatures -22C to -24C.
The top of Northland looks the place for a thunderstorm chance and some eastern coastal areas NI.
