Missed it here too and was sitting down having breakfast at the time, shortly followed by a 3.4 magnitude in the same area of the Lees Valley.
Plus a 2.9 magnitude in Addington/Hillmorton at 9:32am.
I think there could be a decent one coming within the next 24 hours.

No just our predictable nature of rocking canterbury, just when one bigger one happens it upsets the plates.
Geo net asleep once again i see, i would say the latest one is a 4.8 atleast.
Another one followed it just before although didnt feel that one.

Had a powerful one here this morning that made the car rock side to side as i looked outside. I guessed 4.5 nearby and turned out to be 2.9 in spreydon. There is no way it was 2.9 so I believe it must have been one that hasnt shown on geonet also. The neighbour came over also to check everything was alright at the time. This was around 940am this morning.

It felt powerful but because it was so short, it wasn't. Possibly had a strong ground level acceleration force with it that made the car rock.

Interesting reading here about the cheviot 1901 earthquake:

Observations of sand blows (sand volcano) and lateral spreading, consistent with soil liquefaction phenomena in the township of Kaiapoi were reported in local newspapers in a two to three block area at the eastern end of Charles and Sewell Streets on the north bank of the Kaiapoi River, in addition to similar effects observed on the opposing river bank, and the road to Belfast
