Yeah i agree on the dark clouds out NW (helensville way, we have picked up a useful 6.2mm so far on the SVWX rain guage.... :D :D :D Hope there's some more on the way! It has actually set a record for the station for maximum rain rate, which was interesting as the rain was very heavy in a short burst.

Currently getting rain out of the Helensville cell - 3mm fell here, nothing spectacular. The anvil stretched nearly 40km back towards Auckland as I left the CBD at 4.30pm which looked pretty good from the NW Motorway.

Cheers,

G

So happens I took a photo of the Helensville cb from central Ak on the way home. Yes, this anvil spread right across Auckland in the strong upper NW flow.

There is a active cloud about 6-7km to my east (counting delay between flash and thunder) it was quite frequent about 20 minutes ago but has been dying out :? Hopefully we will get some more tonight!

Just noticed these metars from Auckland airport. They must have been hearing thunder from the CB to the south. 5pm and 6pm hourly obs here.

6pm Mar 31 68 (20) 57 (14) 29.94 (1014) NE 17 rain with thunder in the vicinity

5pm Mar 31 69 (21) 55 (13) 29.91 (1013) NNE 15 rain with thunder in the vicinity

Metars give in brackets temperature, dewpoint, pressure.

In the metservice link replace 'viewer' with 'run', like this:

http://www.geographynetwork.co.nz/websi ... ke/run.htm

That'll make it work! It has to load some little html thing, I think.

Hope you guy's get some good stuff!! Nice pics Steven!

Cheers

Hmm, while we are on about Metservice, why is that SKY Weather can get 15min rain radar updates but the Metservice site takes 3 HOURS between updates????

Sorry ifthis question has been asked before...it just intrigues me... :?: :!:

Tip for looking at the metstrike map... open two browser windows the same size and move one exactly over the top of the other, load the page on both, then reload one until it changes, then the other.. Switch between windows to see the changes (new strikes) really easily..

LIGHTNING IN PEGUASUS BAY last night at around 11pm I did note one single strike at about 9pm but then things went quiet as most of the lightning was out sorta near Wellington but surther south.
Then when I checked at around 11pm there had been 4-5 strikes of lightning in Pegusausus Bay and they were quite close in.
Very Amazing considering how cold it was and 4-5 strikes don't just show up for no reason.
Did you just notice the strikes on the tracker, or did you actually see any of them out the window?

I wouldnt say it's better (no offence ricky) but metservices proper Lightning site is commerical, offers also 'live' lightning strikes, of which one can pinpoint were exactly it hit, but this does cost a small fortune

I'm in Queenstown for the weekend, no thunderstorms here.

Saw some very nice anvils from the Aircraft this morn.

Looks like those Cb's to the West of Auckland will cross in the early hours not the best timming for a good Storm esp if the dewpoints are low. This summer we have had our most unstable air crossing at night or the early morning.

Cb's look very good on the Satellite photo.

Yes I did see two flashes out eastwards but very light flashes on the distant horizon plus to the fact that there was strikes on the detector.
Someone was talking about the sky sattelite weather before and I personally reackon it's not that good because they update everything in 6 hours although I havn't been on there in awhile has it changed? doeas anyone know?.

I can't see anything John but if you look at the tracker it has an area of strikes which iam guessing is a small CB somewhere out at sea.
We could smile and think it could track our way but I shall just watch and observe ;) :-k .
Cheers
