Low #3, yet more Thunderstorms

Heavy rain here at the moment.

Some very wet looking cb's about today. Suprisingly no thunder. NZWP0000Z sounding suggests thunder likely. Not enough forcing.

I think there has been some weak lightning in some of those cbs, heard some strong sferics on the radio while driving.. the lightning channel.. my favourite!

, Boltek has been trying to make something out of them

i think the updrafts are not strong enough....one ingredient missing
the edges of the cumulus clouds are not very "clear cut"

Bah! typical - whenever I go out of town something interesting happens. Basking in the sun here at Fox Glacier - clear blue skies all day, warm even!

Just wait for me to get back to Auckland and the wx will return to it's normal self

Looks like this system was a bit of a fizzer compared to the last system.
Never mind, the people of Coromandel/ BOP would of been quite relieved.

I think its time for me to start counting the Boring weather

hours each day and on and on it goes until finally thunder we hope

Atleast we will see an 18C day tomorrow unlike last 4-5 days.

Should be a bit warmer the next couple of days but then it is May.
The latest system looks like a bit of a fizzer as far as cold weather goes but it should generate some thunderstorms for the North Island.
I know that they need them at the moment as there is a bit of a drought of thunderstorms in the North Island at the moment.

(Right, now to take off my jersey and pull it over my head in the dark)

Looks to be a nice cold pool out there in the Tasman. Cold pools are the most reliable source of instability.

this next front is coming in like a freight train, and if it carry's on moving NE at the speed it is, then it will be affecting the NI before 6pm today....the current forecast only talks about rain overnight....
thoughts?

update:
well, all the rain must be at the very back edge of the frontal cloud bands seen on the sat image.....i.e the front has alot of high cloud streaming off.....always learning!

It's extremely cold outside at the moment, can't see any lightning but lots of cooling aloft with high cloud. Maybe too cold for significant convection.

its a very damp cold , with the dew point near 12oC (i.e over 90% humidity)......feels much colder, especialy at night, with a breeze, than the same temperature if the humidity/dew point was much lower

i.e a dry cold is much easier to handle than a damp, to the bone, cold

That skinny little cold front is fast approaching from the west.. but it's actually going to be a warm front if you think about it paradoxially

Going for a high tomorrow of 16c! That cold pool doesn't look very thundery at the moment. Will need a moisture feed somewhere to gain instability.

That squall line/front has compacted nicely now.. wouldn't be suprised if it's embedding waterspouts currently.

two strikes in the last 20 mins. The first was a deep boom, the second a little louder as the storm had passed. We might get a few storms today once the sun comes up and gives rise to some decent convection. It's very cold aloft.(Winters coming). By the way, what do you think happened to the Autumn equinox winds this year, we usually get some reasonably strong wind, now or before now?

We usually should get mainly NE winds in Autumn but even not a lot of those,all the leaves have just been dropping,The SW wind has been quite far north lately due to the jetstream north of N.Z
