Had some overnight rain which dusted the hilltops around Akaroa (700m+) with snow, then cleared up to give a frost. Just had another light shower.

At Lake Tekapo this morning it was -7ËšC. We went up there on Friday through Omarama, beautiful hoar frost up there. Near Twizel we stopped at a pond on the edge of the highway to see Australian tourists standing in the middle of the pond. We suggested that the ice wasn't quite deep enough to do it safely and they shouldn't be jumping to much in one place with 5 of them there. They then mentioned that they had heard quite a few cracks :)

Anyway spent the weekend ice skating at the rink, going to the Mt John Observatory to see the stars and snowboarding at Roundhill. The temperature didnt' get above 0ËšC the whole weekend.

Down to -9.1 °C at 07:11. Looks set to be yet another magnificent winter's day in the Mackenzie.

Awoke this morning to the heaviest Hoar frost I've ever seen. Everything is white. It's like living and working in a deep freezer.

It was -10 °C at 06:08 and lots of fog. Quite spectacular.

I edited my previous post as you were writing yours!

Do you ever get up to Lauder? I hung out with the beardie weirdies at NIWA's site there a couple of years back (Many of them are amateur astronomers and a big part of the Central Otago Astronomical Society and Alex observatory.)

And a new 2007 low for Twizel this morning of -8.6 °C at 07:50ish.

So a lot of the hoar frosts in Alex and surrounding areas are really Rime, especially with the constant freezing fogs?

Very probably. I always call them Hoar frosts because I'm ignorant and lazy. :P

It's -7.7 °C in Twizel, after a morning low so far of -8 °C at 08:11. The usual foggy conditions and rime ice everywhere.

Omarama is at -9.5 °C now and fine again as usual. ;)

A woman who normally works out of Christchurch posted on the Meridian intranet news site that Twizel had a "Hore" frost and was down to -10 °C. When I emailed her to explain that Meridian's own weather station gave a low reading of -8.8 °C she didn't deign to reply...or correct the misinformation on the Meridian intranet news site.

I feel a bit left out with all these hoar frosts around, we've had a couple of nights which have been lightly foggy but around 3-4 c, then last night just as it dropped below zero and I was hopeful of a hoar frost as it was a bit misty too,a breeze picked up and the cloud came in. ](*,)

A hoar frost in Rolleston would be a very rare occurrence indeed. I have seen it get pretty close at times but never to the point where things start turning white.

...and if they occurred in brothels, they'd be called whore frosts.

Seriously, I wonder how coastal is this cloudy and drizzly stuff in Canterbury - in other words how far inland would you have to go to escape it.

Interesting to see those persistent very cold day time temps down there.

I see the temp at Auckland Airport fell from 16C (NE) to 14C(SW) mid afternoon, first seabreeze ?, up to 17-18C over the Ak isthmus.
