I wonder if the increase in gas is just caused by the lake drying out?

I don't think so - the gas will get to the surface just as well lake or no lake (unless it was a very deep lake...)
GNS scientists say it is quite likely that the increases in sulphur gases are caused by re-heating and movement of elemental sulphur in the hydrothermal system surrounding the new magma beneath the crater.

White Island drum is the busiest I have seen it so far, I count 29 volcanic quakes!

Make that 38 in the past 24 hours ;) o_O
Clearly there is more than just a little bit of magma working its way up... exciting stuff!

Nuts!!! I can't even count them. There's too many. Every 2.5 min there is another. It's really ramped up in the last 5 hours.

Heaps of steam but I think that is to do with higher humidity today

Yeah it's getting hard to count them now, but I just counted 48 on the latest drum, can't guarantee I got them all though ;)

Significant quake this morning?

I do wish they would increase the scale from the 3000 it seems to be stuck on.

I think that was the 6.3 north of East Cape just after 6pm Saturday.

Yep, I agree in hindsight, but the little ones present overnight look like they could be small volcanic ones.

I agree. It must be a nightmare for Geonet to try and figure out what's going on with the volcano. Sizable volcanic tremor then nothing and then the tremor comes back. Same with the quakes. Who's want to be a volcanologist?

yea shes cranking away again today. its the strongest and most consitant tremor to date. Small quakes occuring and the steam rising looks to me like its the biggest plume yet too.

i get the impression the little hybrid quakes are releasing energy. every time they start the level of the tremor decreases

I see seismic activity is still high, yet nothing further from IGNS re the activity. I can't help wondering if they will ultimately get caught short like they did with Tongariro reawakening.

And it settles back down again on the drum. Question is for how long?
